  1. So just an update... I replaced my radio about 2 weeks ago and everything has been fine! Must have been a short in the radio or a bad wiring job. The Brake light did not fix itself so I took it in, they said it is also an indicator that the brake Fluide is low, and it ws(someone on here already mentioned that!). So now it has been fine now power problems or diode whinning. Thanks for your help. I will be back as they told me that one of my Cylinders (#4) is dropping to 40% when I go up hills, no wonder the car boggs down and everyone passes me, any sugestions for this? thanks y'all. Oh ya GO DUCKS!
  2. Anyone know of a good electrical/Aternator repair shop in Portland, Oregon for a '96 Outback with alternato/battery problems... thanks
  3. It is a '96 and has about 147,000. I am going to look tonight to see if the lt has ever had problems before. I have not used a volt meter as I would not know where to place it.
  4. So the humming noise started a while ago, usaully with the ac or the radio on and the lights on. The noise is louder when the radi0 is on as it comes out of the speakers(only when radio was on). It sounds more like it is in the dash, and it is directly "in-sync" with the acceleration and shifthing of the car. Then one day when I pressed the breaks all the power to the dash dies and then within 1 sec omes back to life, dash lights illuminate and gagues drop to zero!?!? I have not had this problem once since not using the radio. But the "hum" is around when lights and seat heaters and ac is on. Then a few weeks ago the 'brake' light was on when I started the car and would not turn off when I realeased the e-brake. Once the car was warm or something and I touched the brakes, the light would go away. STRANGE STRANGE STRANGE, I don't know what to do...
  5. I had the alt tested at the Subaru Dealer about 1 month ago they said it was charging fine, someone said it might be the diodes are going or went bad. What are those? Can they be replaced? I just want to fix this and be able to listen to the radio again. Would giving it a new battery make any difference? Thanks for your help everyone, this place is awsome...
  6. I am totaly new at this, is there a manual on-line somewhere. Also 1stsubaruparts has one for around 70 bucks. Is that a good price?
  7. Ok so my '96 Outback has had this wierd electrical huming noise, the battery light is on then off and back on again, and when you depress the brakes(abs) all the dash power dies and then comes back on. From searching on this forum it looks like I need a new Alt? right? How could I do this myself? I would love to not have to take it to the dealer and pay 400.00 dollars in repairs. Any help or advice much appreciated!, or if you know of a good shop in Portland, Oregon let me know
  8. That's what I am saying. I don't think it is the alt. the problem ONLY happens if the radio is on. Any other suggestions, I think it may be a faulty wire or a short in the dash, now I just need to trouble shoot it.
  9. can you replace just the alternator diodes? How hard is it? Also for the last month I have not turned on the radio and not one time have I had a problem... This only happens with the radio face on(can't find it anywhere) so I have had no problem but it is so boring driving with no tunes. Anyone know of a good electrical/alt reapair shop in Portland, Oregon? Thanks everyone!
  10. ok - so I took my car in and had the alt. checked and the battery and they both came out in tip-top shape. Now what? How can I trouble shoot this? They want to charge a lot of $ for them to do it, any suggestions? Thanks. oh yeah this place is great!
  11. do i have to go to the dealer for this? how hard is it to replace an alternator? Any help is greatly appreciated....
  12. Thought I would try here since I am sick of going to the dealer and spending lots of money. Anyone on here know of a good Subaru Mechanic for a 96 Outback in Portland, Oregon. I am looking to have some service done to my car and would appreciate any recomendations. Thanks.
  13. ok so today I did not turn on the radio and no problems. For about 2 weeks I have noticed that when the radio is on there is this strange humming noise comming from the speakers that is exactly in tune with the acceleration and shifting of the car. any suggestions or answers? thanks so much
  14. OK so I have 96 subaru outback and this just started. When I push the brake pedal the abs light slow comes on & the gauges all drop to 0(mph & rpm) & the fasten seatbelt light some on & the at oil temp light comes on. Then in a second they go off and the car is fine. This does not cause the car to stop, it drives fine. also the radio will power off and then power back on. Any ideas, it just started and happens after the car has been running a while. Is it the battery or a fuse? thanks so much for your help.
  15. You're Right! I took it in and they said that the fuel injector is losing pressure and needs to be replaced. Is this correct?? or do think I should only have them replace the check valve in the fuel system?? if that is possible? thanks
  16. Thanks:) , I will try that tomorrow mourning. There is no pattern with this, some mornings starts right up then I go to work 4hrs later go to lunch and the car won't start for a couple of times. Then lay the foot on the gas and it slowly will get going. What do you mean by error codes? nate
  17. Hello All, I have been having this problem for the last couple of weeks. When I try and start my 1996 Subaru Outback it sometimes won't start. It the car will turn over but will die after a sec or two. After two or three tries and stepping on the gas pedal it will finally start and drive just fine. Other times it starts right up like nothing is wrong!? Has anyone had this happen to them? Anyone think they may know what the problem is? Thanks, new user
