  1. So just an update...

I replaced my radio about 2 weeks ago and everything has been fine! Must have been a short in the radio or a bad wiring job. The Brake light did not fix itself so I took it in, they said it is also an indicator that the brake Fluide is low, and it ws(someone on here already mentioned that!). So now it has been fine now power problems or diode whinning. Thanks for your help.

I will be back as they told me that one of my Cylinders (#4) is dropping to 40% when I go up hills, no wonder the car boggs down and everyone passes me, any sugestions for this? thanks y'all.

    Oh ya GO DUCKS!

  2. You have a diode going bad in the alternator. Thast why you are getting weird electrical issues. Yes you can replace the diode, now do you want to spend the 2-3 hrs to rebuild the alt to do it? or just get the rebuilt alt and throw it in. Also sounds like you may have a bad brush in the alt too.

Did i miss year/mileage on the car?

There is another way to check .... disconnect the alt belt and start the car. If the noise goes away, you found your issue. If it didnt, you now know what it isnt.

This is assuming you have a stong battery. Have you checked the battery voltage (with a real volt meter) with the car off and running and while reproducing the condition?

    nipper

It is a '96 and has about 147,000. I am going to look tonight to see if the lt has ever had problems before. I have not used a volt meter as I would not know where to place it.

  3. Yeah, I was afraid it might NOT be the alternator. Can you pinpoint the humming at all? Could it be coming from the ABS relay under the hood? Did they read the computer codes? What codes were set?

Will the problem not present itself often enough for a mechanic to troubleshoot for you? It may be difficult for you to make any observations that would help us guess the problem. Perhpas, someone on the board could recommend a good mechanic near you.

    I dunno

So the humming noise started a while ago, usaully with the ac or the radio on and the lights on. The noise is louder when the radi0 is on as it comes out of the speakers(only when radio was on). It sounds more like it is in the dash, and it is directly "in-sync" with the acceleration and shifthing of the car. Then one day when I pressed the breaks all the power to the dash dies and then within 1 sec omes back to life, dash lights illuminate and gagues drop to zero!?!? I have not had this problem once since not using the radio. But the "hum" is around when lights and seat heaters and ac is on. Then a few weeks ago the 'brake' light was on when I started the car and would not turn off when I realeased the e-brake. Once the car was warm or something and I touched the brakes, the light would go away. STRANGE STRANGE STRANGE, I don't know what to do...

  4. Ok so my '96 Outback has had this wierd electrical huming noise, the battery light is on then off and back on again, and when you depress the brakes(abs) all the dash power dies and then comes back on. From searching on this forum it looks like I need a new Alt? right?

How could I do this myself? I would love to not have to take it to the dealer and pay 400.00 dollars in repairs. Any help or advice much appreciated!, or if you know of a good shop in Portland, Oregon let me know

  5. You can replace the diodes but I think you would be better off to replace the alternator with a rebuilt one. I would try to get one from Bosch if you can. They have a good warranty.

I don't see how turning on the radio would make a difference unless there is a power connection problem somewhere.

That's what I am saying. I don't think it is the alt. the problem ONLY happens if the radio is on. Any other suggestions, I think it may be a faulty wire or a short in the dash, now I just need to trouble shoot it.

  6. can you replace just the alternator diodes? How hard is it?

Also for the last month I have not turned on the radio and not one time have I had a problem... This only happens with the radio face on(can't find it anywhere) so I have had no problem but it is so boring driving with no tunes. Anyone know of a good electrical/alt reapair shop in Portland, Oregon?

    Thanks everyone!

  7. OK so I have 96 subaru outback and this just started.

When I push the brake pedal the abs light slow comes on & the gauges all drop to 0(mph & rpm) & the fasten seatbelt light some on & the at oil temp light comes on. Then in a second they go off and the car is fine.

This does not cause the car to stop, it drives fine. also the radio will power off and then power back on. Any ideas, it just started and happens after the car has been running a while. Is it the battery or a fuse?

thanks so much for your help.

  8. Hi,

Since all starting problems are associated with either fuel, air or spark, it may be best to look at the easy ones first. Do you get any error codes? If so, that ought to point to the problem. Check to see that you have spark. An intermittant ignitor could cause grief.

My guess as to the problem is fuel-related. You don't indicate if there is a pattern to the hard starting, for example, does it always give trouble if the car has sat for a few hours but doesn't if you start it within a short interval? If the check valve in the fuel system fails, the system bleeds off pressure. As a result, when you try to start it, there isn't enough pressure to get the engine to fire.

Try this; let the car sit overnight and then turn the ignition on but don't crank the engine. Give it half a minute or so to allow the fuel pump to pressurize the system and then crank. If it fires right up, you've located the culprit.

The more esoteric problems can have to do with bad crank or cam sensors, etc. but those will set an error code. I'm guessing you have a fuel problem.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

    Regards,

    Adnan

    You're Right!

I took it in and they said that the fuel injector is losing pressure and needs to be replaced. Is this correct?? or do think I should only have them replace the check valve in the fuel system?? if that is possible?

    thanks

  9. Hello All,

I have been having this problem for the last couple of weeks. When I try and start my 1996 Subaru Outback it sometimes won't start. It the car will turn over but will die after a sec or two. After two or three tries and stepping on the gas pedal it will finally start and drive just fine. Other times it starts right up like nothing is wrong!?

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Anyone think they may know what the problem is?

    Thanks,
