  1. 99 Legacy OB wagon 2.5 automatic Can someone tell me how to disassemble the shift-lever console on this vehicle. The button on the lever doesn't release sometimes (usually when cold). If I wiggle it around while pressing the button, it will unlock. I'm thinking there may be something sticky (think The Pespsi Syndrome) on the solenoid that causes this. If I could peek inside, maybe I could better tell, and perhaps even clean it up a little. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  2. Crystal Clear. Thanks. Turns out the mechanic never tightened the bolt on the pulley all the way. Tightening that up got rid of the squeaks. Thanks again.
  3. 99 Legacy Outback 2.5L Just got it back from shop for timing belt, water pump, cam seals ($450 at Auto Lab). I don't think they tightened the Serp Belt enough when they put it back together. I would take it back and make them tighten it, but it's a 15 mile trip each way and I don't have time. I'm guessing it's pretty easy. Could tell me what to tighten and where? Thanks in advance.
  4. I got a 99 Outback 2.5 with about 110K miles. I know it's time for a change, but what else should I have changed along with it? I've heard you should change the water pump, too. Anything else? Could a handy guy with a few wrenches do this himself? Should I take it to the dealer? Should I take it to an independent mechanic? How much should it (will it) cost? Thanks
  5. I was looking under the steering column of my 99 Legacy Outback Wagon (Auto Trans 2.5) to see if I could see something wrong with my brake switch to solve my problem of the Shift Lock not releasing when in Park (see earlier post today). I spotted 2 wires that each have a Green connector (1 male and 1 female). The wires are not connected. One wire is black with 2 red stripes and white spots, the other is a sky blue with maybe a green stripe and white spots. Is this something the mechanics forgot to hook back up when they worked on it? Are they supposed to be NOT connected? Does anyone know what they are for? Could they have to do with my not being able to shift out of Park when it's cold? Thanks
  6. I have a 99 Legacy Outback Wagon (auto trans 2.5L). When it's cold, I cannot shift the car into any gear. I press the button on the shift lever and I cannot pull the lever back into Reverse or Drive. I can hear something clicking below the steering column when I press the button. And yes, I am applying pressure to the brake as I do this. I have to wait until the car warms up before it will work. Sometimes up to 5 minutes. Then it works fine until it's cold again. Winter is coming soon. Can someone help?
