  1. I have been learning..Im 19 yrs old..I just did a full gasket rebuild by myself cause I never had a Father figure in my life to teach me anything about cars.

    My first time ever pullin a motor out of a car. First time ever rebuilding a motor. ************ sorry for not being up on the learning curve just yet..thats why I asked for help..and I sure didnt want some ***************rump roast runnin his mouth:mad: .

  2. On the pics, etc.

     

    I actually forgot to take a pic of the side of the LCA that the shop welded prior to Skip and I doing the damage beating on it trying to remove it. But as you can see it was pretty wimpy.

     

    The car has lived it's life in the Pittsburgh area. I doubt it's actually set around in salt water.

     

    I can invision it setting in a driveway or two, along a wall on the right side, perhaps under a tree. I found no tree remnants on it in the cowl, paint stains, etc.

     

    So far so good. He says the odometer is off about 8 MPH at 60 MPH(he's really doing more like 50 MPH). It had 14" 185/70/14's on it with factory steel wheels and hubcaps, and I put the same size aluminum wheels with winter tires back on it. It's a L model so I would expect 14's. I know most cars overstate MPH a little. Other than different tires (probably 15") I don't know of another way to remedy this. I think he's just gonna have to live with it.

     

    I don't have a vacuum gauge (just a compression gauge) but perhaps I can borrow one if he has any more troubles when it comes back for an oil change or another issue.

  3. Why doesn't your friend rent a car to get back home? Then maybe it won't be such an urgent matter to get a replacement vehicle quickly.

    Then maybe they can look around when they get home. -SQ93

     

    Sorry about the urgency, but visiting friend's car appears to have broken completely and need to replace ASAP in order to get them back home, about 300 miles away, to get to work.

    The tow service has a 1998 Legacy Outback with 112,000 miles that they will sell for $7500, and will give $500 - $1700 (unseen range) for the 1990 Toyota dual-cab pickup that the engine seems to have gone out on (were going to try to get that scoped out in the morning at the local repair garage).

    Quick thoughts ?

    Thanks for the wonderful phototravel essay! I too have visited Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion NPs a few times now and was not familiar with Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument. Next time I visit that part of the world, it will have to be on my list. Once again, thank you very much! By the way, is AWD needed for the trip on those back roads or would a FWD Legacy be up to the task? -Charles, SQ93

     

    Hey USMB, I put together a little writeup of our Memorial Day weekend trip to Southern UT. I have posted a couple of these photos in the Offroad forum where relevant but the trip itself was more about backpacking and driving scenic roads than any offroading just for the sake of offroading, so I'm posting this here.

    I'm talking about the electronic versions people are selling on CD's, not paperback. They download the entire set and make as many copies as they want and sell them on ebay. Most of the people who do it are in canada, where they dont get hit by our copywright laws. Though if a US citizen buys it, that US citizen is commiting copywright infringement.

Be prepared with as much documentation as you can as to what money you have recently put into the car (for mods or upgrades, etc.) so that you can get the insurance company to more fairly reimburse you for your loss (if your car is not found). I had put $500 into new tires on a vehicle of mine and two days later it was totaled and the insurance company only paid about $50 extra and said "well, it has to have tires." I wasn't feeling the best, dealing with headache (probably from a concussion) and so I accepted the deal. My insurance company did take care of my medical bills when the other driver's (the other driver was the one at fault) company refused to pay my medical bills.

    Not a peep. At this point I am hoping it's not found because it's probably been abused.

     

    I can only hope that whoever took it needed the money or whatever really badly, because it certainly has put me at a great loss. I worked hard to pay that thing off and I am in no position to buy a new one.

     

    Insurance will probably be close to blue book I imagine. I'm pretty sure I won't be buying another new car, and a used RS...well...let's just say that I also put some serious money into mine just to get it past a few of the known "issues" (stolen @ 70K miles). I am not sure about buying one I have no history with and having to go through some of that again.

     

    If anyone has any tips or advice on settling with the insurance company or finding a replacement at some point, let me know. I started my own business recently and just can't do the car payment thing. I'm seriously thinking about a bicycle.

  7. We had a '70 and '74 Bug, and a '73 411 wagon. I didn't drive then, but we enjoyed those VWs as much as I enjoy my Subaru. -SQ93 :)

     

    I'm a member of TheSamba.com forums as well because in addition to the pair of Subarus I've also got a '72 VW Karmann Ghia. In browsing the photos both on here and at TheSamba it seems that once you've owned a flat-4 you never go back! Numerous photos on both sites show either someone's Subaru with an air-cooled VW in the background or an air-cooled VW with a Subaru in the background.

     

    How 'bout it, folks? Raise your hand (and post a photo, maybe?) if you've got an old VW/Subaru pair. :)

  8. As another poster suggested, the label in the engine bay should tell you. As California no longer charges that $300 smog impact fee, the only thing you have to worry about is if you live in one of the counties where it must pass smog check. If replacement parts are different for each engine (CA and Federal), that I don't know.

    how do i tell the difference between a california or federal emissions car

    checking carfax my car was sold in PA, then went to NY, and finally i brought it to CA after buying it in OR.

    coming from back east i was sure it would be a Federal emissions vehicle, how can i tell for sure?

  9. Have you tried eBay? It usually has run me $10-60 for repair manuals for my vehicles when buying them on eBay and that is for the factory service manuals. Chilton's or Hayne's books usually for $20 or less, including shipping.

     

    Does anyone have an alternative for a service/repair manual for an 01 OB? The dealer wants $500 and the subscription seems rather high as well. Is there anything else out there?

  10. I tried to be helpful to area farmers by using the 89 octane ethanol, but it just killed my gas mileage by at least 10% and in some cases, more. My 1993 Legacy L wagon (236k) also did not run as well on the ethanol, particularly in colder weather. Warm weather (above 50 degrees F) and 87 regular gas and I get 22-24 city and 28-31 highway (even fully-loaded). Higher driving speeds and the gas mileage dips. Colder weather also makes it worse.

     

    You will get odd mpg results on a single tank.

     

    If you're really serious about getting a true mpg:

     

    You need to average your mileage over several tankfuls. It helps to stick to the same gas station and pump and let the tank go down all the way before filling it up. The auto cut-off at the pump can really vary depending on the station, temp, etc. There is also a thread about 10% ethanol gas that explains some of the possible mpg variance.

     

    You can get a bad highway mpg if you run into headwinds (you said 55mph winds???), go significantly over 65mph, or have a loaded car.

     

    I wouldn't worry too much if you just got one bad mpg reading. It happens.

  11. Unless they have added it recently, Subaru didn't have a recognition program for high mileage vehicles (some Subaru club might, I just don't know, anyone out there know?). My 1993 Legacy wagon just turned over 236,000 last night.

     

    Mercedes used to send you badges to put on your grill when the car reached 100k, 250k, etc.

     

    Wonder if Sub has ever done anything like that .

  12. You may want to inquire at the DMV about what regs they might have for replacement engines in terms of passing smog. They might even have some answers on their web site: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

     

     

     

    Ok after searching for a good time i need to ask this. Is their anyway to tell the difference in years between ej22's? like can i tell if an ej22 is 92 or newer? I don't have the car (engine was pulled by someone else) trying to do a motor swap into a loyale. also is their a specific california engine? like i have to buy a cali engine if it is to pass smog?

     

    any help is much appreciated
