  1. Ok..I think through some real thought (damn its hard right now with all the Red Sox excitement) I may have an electric pump...right? BUT it only ticks when the car is idling ****ty. Maybe I'll replace the cap, rotor and wires just to see what happens.
  2. If my fuel pump is ticking like a clock (sometimes) and I am having idle/start-up problems then should I assume that I need a new fuel pump? or is it shorting somewhere?? GO RED SOX!!!
  3. Every time I have posted here I have searched first. Just trying to learn. Thanks for the answers. Matt
  4. Ok...now I am officially doudly confused. The guy at the local auto parts store told me there is no timing belt on an ea-71. Is this true? I am so new to this I don't know if I trust that. Thanks again, Matt
  5. How do I keep the car runnig when I pour Sea Foam into the carb? Is it safe to have someone reving the engine as I do it? Also, if I add seafoam to my gas tank will it do the same as pouring it directly into the carb?....and should I change my oil after running with sea foam added to the crankcase? Will it cause oil breakdown? Thanks, Matt
  6. Is there an engine diagram out there anywhere of the firing order for a 1980 ea-71 engine? I also need to know where to start on the distributor. Where does it fire first? Thanks, Matt
  7. Yeah, It is an exhaust explosion. Actually there is a ticking noise..sounds like there is a clock behind the steering wheel ticking away at least when I am sitting in the car. Is that what you are talking about? Thanks, Matt
  8. Great Idea! Anything to help me get my car running well! I can dig it!
  9. Ok...my 3rd post today... My car is running pretty rough when I started it. It also stalled a few times letting it idle. I drove it around for a while just to see if after it warmed up anything would change. When I got home I let it idle and it seemed better but when I turned it off it backfired pretty loudly. I need this car! Please refer to my other post too.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23268 i need help! Thanks, Matt
  10. Thanks for the replies. I will take a look.
  11. I just got a 1980 4wd 2dr hatch 1600(?) 101,000 mi. I replaced the spark plugs and oil immediately. The car seems to knock and I cannot tell if its actually the lifters or if its in fact maybe an exhaust leak. I went ahead and pulled one of the plugs I put in and its already carbon fouled. What the hell can I do? I want to get this beast back into great working order so I can drive down to the Bay Area as much as I want to (Im in Tahoe about 3 hours away from Oakland/SF) without worrying too much. Any suggestions? Matt
  12. Why doesn't my VIN show up on carfax? I have a 80 2dr hatch 4wd. I just got it and I am trying to figure out the engine type and actually if its a 1600 or 1800. I am just learning about subarus. I was a saab wacko for a while but lost some interest. Anyone help? vin# JF23AF31F AG703352
