  1. Just failed my emissions test, based on a OBD II code P0420. Running through the recommended checks of the exhaust system before I go and replace the converter(s), but everything is looking like I'll have to do it. I am pricing out replacement ones, but some websites don't have a listing for cats for the 2.2L. However, they do have cats for the 2.2L Legacy at a pretty good price. My question is, are these compatible with the Impreza?
  2. I'm having troubles with the brake lights in my 97 Impreza wagon. The left brake light went out. It looked like the contact in the socket had overheated and melted back down into the socket, and lost contact with the bulb. I replaced the socket assembly (in fact the whole rear light combination, since its all on the one connector), but no dice. The right one is out now as well. I am getting 12 V to the socket contacts, but the bulbs aren't lighting up. All the tail lights and turn signals work. However, the plot thickens, because in the last week, I lost the horn (blown fuse, replaced and still working), cruise control and dash illumination. This all points to a short...somewhere. I am getting the service manual (ie wiring diagrams) as I type this, but does anyone have any suggestions?
  3. A month after we bought the sooby, I decided to figure how it went in a snowy parking lot. Needless to say, much better than the old 2wd toyota. Unfortunately, someone one else had been doing the same thing, but a lot closer to a nearby gas station, then took off before we got there. I found this out because the cops busted me for causing trouble and driving recklessly. Fortunately I was able to talk my way out of a ticket.
  4. Hmmmmm. The tosser at Car Toys sold me a shiny new chrome handle with a fabric/kevlar cover, then told me that they could install it for $35 an hour. I figured that it couldn't be that hard, could it? It looks like it slides over the end, and is held in place by a lock nut arrangement. Guess I'll have a go, and see what I come up with.
  5. Thanks, I thought it might, but didn't want to start cranking on it without checking first. What's the deal with the emergency brake handle?
  6. My dog was left in the 97 Impreza wagon for about an hour the other day. He ate most of the gear shift knob (manual). I have now purchased a replacement one, made out of titanium. However, I can't figure out how to get the old one off. I assume there is some trick to it. Just thought I'd ask before breaking out the vise-grips and hack saw. He also nibbled the emergency brake handle, which I will also have replace. How do I get that off? Oh yeah, he now rides waaaaay in back, and has a gear shift knob-like chew toy, which is his favorite.
  7. Wow, thanks a bunch. Your website is very helpful. It has already made a difference in the planning.
  8. Thanks for the link. As for pulling the engine, that's exactly what we did 4 months ago on the other vehicle, so I was thinking along those lines. Guess I am buying my buddy more beer for the use of his much larger (and better equipped) shop. Any ideas on how long it would take to do the seals, clutch and timing belt, with the engine out? Is it a weekend thing, or more serious?
  9. I bought a 97 Impreza last year, and it has been leaking oil. I need to replace the main seal. I also need to do the clutch. I want to do it myself having done similar things to my toyota. However, I cannot find any maintenance and repair manuals for the imprezas after 1996, and I want to be able get myself out of trouble.
