  1. Thanks for the info! I do have power locks. So is the part easy to install? Is it something I can get used or should I go new?
  2. Is this easy to do for a 1997 outback. Is it just a matter of adding the remote components?a thanks in advance.
  3. .......also, the flywheel shows a lot of spider cracks, can the flywheel be turned at a machine shop?
  4. Does anyone know if these clutch kits are real OEM? Are they junk? Has anyone heard of this brand? I need to replace a 1997 outback clutch. thanks!
  5. FYI: I have the 2.5 with the Blown HG and rod knock. I found that the bad rod is on the opposite side of the blown HG. At least this what I think at this point(I didn't get the driver side head off today). Anyhow, I hope o find out how bad the crank is on this thing tommorow. Ican tell right now the piston slap is about 1/8 of an inch. I hope I can still use the crank.........
  6. For the remote start, do yo have a stick or auto? I'm also wondering about that for my OB.
  7. Hi All, Does anyone know if keyless entry can be added to a '97 outback that didn't have it to begin with? Would it be hard to install? thanks!
  8. Commuter, What's your thought on the rod knock sound happening at the same time as the HG? Bad crank or main bearings? I have not split the case yet, so I'm not sure what to expect. I have an engine hoist coming this weekend. Would you also go with factory pistons and rings or would you go aftermarket? Again, thanks for the help!
  9. Do you have any ideas on where to get good aftermarket pistons and rings? how about a gasket and seal kit? Nobody seems to have a real answer on these parts. thanks
  10. I called the dealer and they said the fctory fuji HG is a 4 layer. Are there more than 1 type of factory HG? Also, does the thicker HG change anything like compression?
  11. Anyone have a good source for engine parts yet? Or good brand names for HG gasket and other parts? Please help, signed:in pieces(meaning my engine)
  12. Hello all, I have a 1997 Outback that has 166,000 miles on it.I got a reward for the high mileage........a blown head gasket! I was very excited when I got this prestigious award. In fact ,I was so excited I just tore my engine apart last nite in my driveway! I may be sounding like a broken recordon this forum about HG replacement. I have started to read thru everyone's glrious experience but have not come across some important info. I'm concerned about rebuilding with factory parts (like factory HG). Are there aftermarket parts that are better than the factory parts? If so, what brand do I go with? I heard there is a 5 layer HG but article did not say who makes or where to get it. Also, I got a second suprise award..........a rod knock! So I need info on a good quality rebuild kit(incl pistons, rings, seals and gaskets). I'm in a hurry to get back running since this work is being completed in my driveway and the snow is sure to fly soon here in western NY. Thanks for all your help!!
  13. 99obw, I live in Rochester and am going through the same thing at this time. If you still get this, send me an email with you final thoughts on this project. My email is cia.usgov@gmail.com thanks!
  14. Hello all, Just want to know if anyone has recently purchased an engine rebuild kit(with pistons and rings) for a 1997 legacy outback. I'm having problems locating a complete kit. I would also like to know what kit mfg'r is good and which kits to stay away from. I'm also thinking about replacing the clutch while the motor is out.....so a good recommendation for a clutch pack is also appreciated. My car has 166,000 miles on it and I belive the head gasket went because of the oil in my coolant overflow tank. The motor has also developed a loud metal on metal knocking sound, which I belive is a connecting rod. The motor still starts(and runs smooth) and is not seized up. Any help is greatly appreciated.
