  1. Well, the compressor has just been replaced (one month ago) and it does work some of the time. Just these evening it started working again. For some reason it only seems to work when the weather is cooler (less than 80 degrees) otherwise it doesn't work. Any idea what this could mean? Also on the clicking, could we get a concensus whether it is the cv joint or the axle. How can I check? Really guys, I don't know much but appreciate all your input. Thanks again.
  2. My sub has 167K. Tires are new and recently balanced and rotated. I've had the check engine light on for sometime for the 02 sensor but have had it replaced and the light now turns on and off without any predictability. As for the A/C, very few times it works nice but the great majority of the times it doesn't. To give an example, the other night it was cooler but decided to turn on the fan to avoid driving with the windows down. The A/C turned on and was working fine. I made sure by turning the A/C button on and off to make sure there is an actual difference in temperature and there was. It was pretty close to being frigid when it was on. The temperature outside was in the mid 70s. A few hours before that, it was working. Then the next morning, it wasn't working anymore. So it can't be the charge. Also, I recently had the compressor changed. It worked fine continuously for about a week and then now it works on and off. Thanks again for the suggestions.
  3. I hope someone can help me with a few problems. I recently spent almost $1000 on repairs and am not looking to spend more in the next year. I have a 97 Subaru Outback Sport Auto. Problem 1: I'm only getting 250 miles to a full tank. Does this sound low to anybody? I thought I should be getting something like 300 or so. I noticed that acceleration is sluggish. Not that the transmission is slipping but it seems like there is a delayed reaction between my stepping on the accelerator and the engine. Problem 2: sometimes my A/C works and most of the times it doesn't. Any particular way to check wiring on this for a newbie? Problem 3: there is a clicking on my front left wheel when I do slow speed sharp turns. It doesn't happen when I drive fast or when I turn a little. By sharp turns, I mean I'm turning the wheel more than once all the way around. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  4. My backing plates are completely rusted and need to be replaced. I don't know much about mechanics but do construction. Is there anything special I should know about replacing front and rear backing plates or is it a unscrew and replace type of thing that I can do with regular (non-specialized) equipment? Any help would be great!!! Please. I have an Impreza Outback Sports 1997. Mechanics in the area offered close to $2,000 to do it. I just can't afford that.
  5. If any one can point me to the right direction, I'll be a very happy camper. My A/C is not blowing out cold air. The blower works. But the A/C button does not light up when I press it like it did a few months back. I tried recharging it with new oil from Walmart but the compressor wasn't turning on. A mechanic told me I had to jump the low pressure bypass switch. That didn't work so I ended up jumping the compressor itself. That worked so it started pulling in refridgerant. It started getting cooler and the bypass and compressor started working on their own but it still wasn't cold enough. So I bought more oil and ended up overcharging it. High pressure oil shot off from the side of something close to the compressor. It stopped working for a while but after a few hours rest, it seems to be back to square one. Does anybody have any idea of what's going on? I saw posts about bad relays and bad switches. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks everybody. Rex
  6. A friend just told me that Subarus are notorious for rust. Ironically, the Subaru I just bought (1997 Impreza Outback) has rust in both the rear wheel well. I have another friend with both rear quarters rusted. My argument to him was that it's probably because most Subarus are used in severe conditions with lots of mud, snow, rocks and water (you know, like the commercials). And he argued that he knows 4X4 trucks that are also exposed to that but they don't rust as easy. He said that the problem is that the metal used on Subarus are sub-standard to galvanized steel used by others. Is there any truth to this? How is everybody else's experience? Is everybody's Roo rusting out as well? Obviously I don't mean the one's that just bought theirs but the 2000 and older models.
  7. Just bought a used Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.2L Auto and it came with 17" rims with 25" walls low profile tires. I would like to keep the motegi alloy rims but wouldn't be able to drive during Winter. So before I trade them in for a 16", does anybody know if there is such a thing as a low profile snow tire. Right now the walls of the tires are 25" and seem pretty close to the wheel well. So the only option I have is to get smaller rims and get medium profile snow tires. Would love any advice.
  8. I have the same knocks at cold start but it "seems" to disappear after several minutes of driving. Someone mentioned that it reduces engine life from 200k to 175K. What exactly happens when it reaches the end? A blown HG, or what?
  9. I recently sold my Geo Prizm which has a reputation of lasting past 200K+ before any major repairs are expected and bought a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.2L Auto Transmission. Reading some of the posts, it doesn't sound like Subaru engines last very long. Someone wrote that 150K is good for the engine before Head Gaskets and knocks start happening. Is it that bad? What about the drive train? Does that fall apart around 150K too. Any 411 on this is appreciated.
