  1. I drove the parts car it came out of home.  I don't remember any grinding or anything to that effect.  The only thing I remeber being an issue was the clutch being shot and having to nurse it home.  Can you elaborate on the uninstalling the shifter and said machanisms?  I am not really sure what you mean by that.  When I did the tranny swap, I only changed the 4wd linkage.  I never even detached the regular linkage.

  2. I just swapped a 5sp into my EA81 I have the clutch adjusted correctly I believe, but it still grinds going into 2nd gear and it has begun doing it going into 4th as well.  It is worse down shifting than up shifting.  I have also tried double clutching to no avail.  Ideas?  I am running the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate with the EA82 clutch.  Could this be it?

  3. Well the clutch was a four spring and didn't sit flush in the pressure plate. Got a new one that fits, new pilot bearing and new throw out bearing. Going to install this afternoon. We'll see if that works. Thanks for the hint on the four spring clutch disc.

As for the no start condition: when I removed the transmission, the engine tilted forward from lack of weight on the back. When it did that, it pulled some vacuum fittings loose that I didn't notice. Once I get everything back together, we'll see if that's the answer to this problem.

Reverse light I am hoping is just a bad sensor. Never thought to test before pulling donor transmission.

  4. The short answer is that the throwout bearing is probably the wrong one for this clutch combo. You have a couple of options. First simply lengthen the threaded rod section of the clutch cable to give you just a little more adjustment room. This can actually work. Second, the correct way would be to just pull the engine forward and install the T/O bearing that works with this combo (Nissan 720 pickup?). Also, make sure you used the 6 spring style EA82 disc as the 4 spring version may not clear the center hole in the EA82 pressure plate. This would also create a binding or no release situation.

Has anyone else had to change the throw out bearing to something other than the ea82 or ea81? Is it possible this flywheel, clutch, pressure plate combo don't work? Has anyone else run this setup?

  5. I got the 5sp tranny mounted up to the motor and the clutch won't disengage. I went with the ea81 flywheel and pressure plate and the ea82 clutch. I went this route because I wasn't ready to grind on the bell housing yet in order to fit the ea82 flywheel and pressure plate. In the old usrm it said this was a viable option. The clutch cable is tightened a far as it will go. Any thoughts? On a side note, how do I hook up the hill holder?

Also, it won't start now. I haven't hooked the exhaust back up yet because I want to make sure everything else is working fine before I put it all back together. Is this why it won't start? I should also mention it is cranking well, just not starting.

On a third note, the back up lights won't turn on. When I test them, they work fine. When connected to the tranny and shift into reverse, nothing. Can they be wired backwards? I thought I read on here it doesn't matter.

    Any and all help appreciated.

  6. I am working on building my 84 GL Wagon, and I am wondering what height to lift it to.  How high have you lifted yours? Got any pics? What size tires can you fit under it?

Has anyone ever done a suspension lift on one of these instead of just the body lift?  If so, pics and details please. What was the rough cost and level of difficulty?

I am only looking for the EA81 wagon information.  It is not that the other models aren't fun, but I would like to keep this thread specific.

    Thanks for the help,

    Geoff

  7. Alright.  I dropped the EA82 out today, and I noticed it has six wires running from three plugs on the tranny.  The EA81 only has four wires from two different plugs.  My question is what are the other two wires with the extra plug.  I can only think of back up lights and 4WD indicator.

On a side note, the old USRM said to use the EA82 console and boots, but I am going to try and swap the 4WD linkage allowing me to hopefully use the EA81 console and boots.  Any info on success with that?

  8. In the old USRM, there are two links for the swap from an ea81 4sp. tranny to an ea82 5sp.  One says to use the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate with the EA82 clutch disk, and the other says to use the ea82 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate.    So my question is which is correct?  The first one doesn't say anything about mods, and the second requires transferring timing marks and grinding the bell housing.  Thanks for any help.

  9. The shift linkage was initially missing the nut but I found one and put out on. The bushing for the linkage is pretty sloppy but it doesn't even seem like the rod going into the transaxle is even moving. I also am pretty sure it is not the clutch because I can actually start the rig and drive it with enough gas.

  10. Pulling the stick won't help since it's not a top loader tranny. If you can get it out of gear running by trying different shifts in 2wd & 4wd then you've got something bound up or broken internally. You'd have to pull it and split it open. If you're going to do that, may as well just do the swap.

I am going to do the swap, but I would like to put in the other to sell it running.

  11. I just bought an E81 4sp. dr m/t with the transmission stuck in gear.  I tried looking for other threads that might already cover this, but had no luck.  I would like to get it working if possible, but I am not too worried because I have an E82 5sp. dr m/t that I am going to swap it with anyways.
