  1. Hmmm, I've never had to take the belts or tensioner off to do a water pump...

    Northwet was right

Finally! Good thing I have tons of redneck relatives that have been working on cars for years, even if not Subarus...It turns out the o-ring on the metal pipe that runs from the radiator to the side of the pump decided to go. Also, for some reason, the bracket holding the AC and Alt which sits right on top was also causing the hose/tube to sit crooked, compounding the problem. At first we assumed it was the pump, since the gasket was in tatters. A remanned pump and bulletproof gasket + copper gasket paste combo later we realized that it did not get any better. I spent most of the reunion weekend figuring out and fixing the problem. :( I even had to redo the timing because I had to pop off the driver's tensioner and drive belt idle pulley to even get the pump off (Chilton didn't mention any of this)

Now the leak is fixed. However, I am unable to tighten the alternator bracket 100%, because the leak will reappear immediatley. I'm assuming this is because the bracket is applying pressure to the line and shoving it out of the way. It doesnt really matter, I was able to tighten 2 bolts enough that the bracket does not move and the drive belt is tight. The engine is somewhat more "rumbly" and "chatters" whenever I am under a certain RPM.

Hey, but I got home, that was what mattered.

    Thanks for the offered help.

  2. Anyone in the Seattle area.

I'm looking at buying an XT6 for parts. The car has an engine minus ALT, power steering pump. I have no interest in the engine nor the interior nor body panels (maybe the hood). I want the manual AWD transmission, pedal box and other misc. stuff. I drove out to look it over already.

However, I would have to tow it with my Subru from Wenatche to Lynnwood. I have no trailer nor tow hitch. I do not want to tow it behind my car with a tow strap since I'm pretty sure I'd have to disconnect the drive lines.

I am willing to buy the car and for helping me get it to my house, give away any parts that I don't need. Like I said I'm interested in the transmission. I figure an XT6 engine is worth it.

Please PM me if you have any interest or need more info.

I don't suppose the engine is carburated? and functional? and will it work in a GL or DL?

  3. Ok, wife tried doing me a favor this weekend, and I'm at my wits end :(

She went to a local car parts place and got a friend of hers who works there to help her change the cap, rotor, plugs, plugwires and air filter.

They put the plug wires on wrong, and tried to start it up...

it backfired once and just continued cranking.

I've got the wires in the right location and firing orders,

I've tested for spark, and though it seems a wee bit weak it's there, and the car was running with this coil before.

the cap and rotor seem to be the right ones, and with a timing light I verified that I'm getting spark through all of the plug wires.

the old cap was rusty in one tower, and well carboned inside.

This is a 87 GL wagon, 4WD 5SP manual, SPFI...
