  1. 1999 OBW 2.5l A.T. had a low idle (below 700 rpm) & sometimes wouldn't start right up after a short stop (but it always started 2nd time). So, I risked my knuckles & replaced the spark plugs & wires (double platinum NGK/mid priced house wires). ran smooth but noticed that at a light it would idle smoothly, then suddenly shudder, & then resume a good idle (still low, though)... it is consistent problem. The problem is much less noticable if I put the car in neutral. I have replaced the PCV valve, the air filter, the fuel filter & I can find no vacuum leaks... no difference. It also seems to have a lot less pick up than my current wife's '02 Impreza Outback Sport... (that goes like a bat outta hell)... but it never did. It has plenty of power for long trips & can cruise smoothly at 80 mph... although I *never* do that. any help, suggestions, ideas... wisdom? later, Peter
  2. Drive on over. It's a "shade tree" kind of job. I started doing my own brakes when I noticed the guys doing the job. If they could, I could (years ago but still true). 10/12/14 mm. sockets (3/8 drive) or wrenches. A "C" clamp makes it easier but can be done with out... really not difficult. Some times the hardest part is taking off the wheel. IF your time is worth more than $95/hour (dealership rates) let them do it. Quality parts can be purchased at any parts place. I bet there's a video or two on youbertuber that will explain & show you simply how to do the job. or spend the dollars...& the lifetime thing is marketing, btw.
  3. the 2.5 engine is notorius for any coolant change/radiator change leaving air in the system. The air pocket heats up & H.G. leak... the "burping" is incredibly important but not as easy as other cars due to the system's design... get the air out.
  4. I replaced 3 alternators... (besides the original) first two were defective (still under warranty... one was over charging the system)... finally listened to this forums advice & got a Subaru remanufactured ($78 from the dealer)... no problems since.
