  1. Miles Fox, that is strange, about a week before this happened I changed my oil and used Mobil 1 super high mileage 10w 30. It has been really cold lately in the teens and twenties all week.
  2. so I got the cam seal replaced and fluids filled back up and the car is running great! When I took off the cam pulley I was surprised to see that the old cam seal was pushed all the way out! What could cause this? It kinda seemed like someone had done this job before and maybe didn't get the seal pushed in all of the way? I've owned this car for a year and a half and put over 30,000 miles on it. It hasn't overheated on me once. This is the first automatic I've owned and have to admit I'm not super keen on the auto tranny. It is a 96 legacy l wagon 2.2 that's the ej22 right not the ej25? The heater seems to be working great now, but I'm still a little nervous about the head gaskets. The other issue I have had going on since I bought the car is it sometimes it spits gear oil out of the overflow and it pools up in the little dish thing, then drips on my exhaust and smells horrible. Seems to me like an unrelated issue, but thought I'd throw that out there too. The pcv valve looks quite rusty and I'll probably try replacing that tomorrow... Thanks all
  3. I'm going to try to get to my car today and replace a leaky cam seal. The heater in my car also started barely working right before I noticed the massive oil leak. Seems kinda strange, any ideas on why? Also any tips for removing and replacing one cam seal? Of course I'll be working on it in not only snow, but the added bonus of freezing rain:/
  4. I was able to get to my car today (which is stranded in a snowy parking lot in the woods in WA state) and get a better look. I removed the radiator/fans, crankshaft pulley, and TB cover. It looks like the cam seal failed and the leak appears to be isolated to the passenger side. I'm just going to replace the cam seal for now to get my car out of the woods and worry about the rest on a warmer day when I'm not working on it in the snow in the middle of nowhere lol!!
  5. My 96 legacy wagon started gushing out oil today, and it looked like it was coming out the bottom of the timing belt cover. Maybe my oil pump? It hasn't lost any coolant. This is my only car to get around with, any help would be great!

  7. Hey thanks for you input everyone! The wheels are from a 2002 wrx and the tires need replaced so I just ordered some general altimax artics for them. I probably would have gotten a little better traction with the 185/70/14, but the car just looks so much better with the 16's on it=)
  8. Hey, so I'm currently running 205/55/16's(all season) on my 96 legacy wagon, but am thinking of swapping back to the 185/70/14 for a winter snow tire. I recently put the 14's(all season) back on and the handling and steering seemed to improve while the looks of the car suffered:/ I am wondering if I have enough clearance for the tread of a new snow tire with the 205/55/16's ( seems like when I hit a big dip I can hear the tire rub sometimes?) and if there will be enough room to clean out the snow and ice build up in the wheel well. last but not least the 185/70/14 is a narrower tire which should = better traction in the snow eh? What tire size do you recommend for a winter snow tire on a 96 legacy wagon?
  9. Thank you, for all of the replies! Great thoughts. I'm gonna check to see if I can take out some foam or anything to make it fit, and if not I'll find an outback spare or a 195-70-14! Sorry for the slow response, got busy....
  10. So I put some 205/55/16 wrx wheels on my 96 legacy l wagon, and need to find a spare tire that is the same diameter and will fit in the spare tire compartment in the hatch. I used to be able to carry a full sized spare with the 14's, but I tried one of the 205/55/16's and the diameter fit perfect, but the width was to thick and the lid won't close. The factory spare/donut is over an inch smaller diameter than the 205/55/16. I figure that's not good on the AWD if I have to go very far on it... I thought, just get a factory spare from a 2002-04 wrx, but they appear to be the same size as the one I have (T135/70/D16)?
  11. !! Problem Solved !! My temp gauge is now working properly. The sender for the gauge was no good. I removed the original and it looked perfect, I cleaned it and put it back in, still no temp gauge. Got a new coolant temp sender installed today, and finally my temp gauge is at a constant normal operating temp! Almost the best thing that's happened to my car so far... couldn't have done it without you, much appreciated.
  12. That makes sense. I can't believe I didn't see that while I was in there putting in the ECTS lol. I saw it, but was so focused on the ECTS that it didn't even register that it was the single wire spade connector you spoke of. I pulled the wire off and there was no visible corrosion, looked clean as can be, so I just ordered a new one off ebay. I'll post the results when I get the new sensor installed. Can I ground the wire to the block to see if it makes the gauge shoot up, without damaging the gauge or anything?
  13. Thank you, I found that single wire sender for the gauge, I ordered one off ebay, and will throw that in there when I get it! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1274787 I found this helpful
  14. Hmm, it had two wires in the clip that connects to the sensor. I remember you saying its the "single wire", but that's the only sensor I could find in that area of the engine?
  15. I have a 96' legacy 2.2 with 259,000. I got it with 150,000 and have added tie rod ends, brakes, timing belt, wheel bearing, struts, and a rack and pinion boot. It has traveled many bumpy rocky mountain and PACNW roads loaded with a 14ft raft, kayaks, gear, friends, and dogs. And it's been my dirtbag home while working on rivers in WA,OR, and CO. If you love you subie it will love you back! I probably wouldn't still be alive if it wasn;t for the safe handling of the AWD system!
  16. Maybe the gauge itself? is there a way add an aftermarket temp gauge? I put in a new Subaru thermostat( the old one was aftermarket, but not altered in any way) also put in a new coolant temp sensor(no corrosion on the connection at all) Just took off the upper radiator hose that was pretty full looking. Was able to add fluid, and I found that every time I would fill the hose to the top it would make a stream of fluid come out of the radiator where the upper hose was supposed to be. I put the upper hose back on and filled the radiator until full from the cap. Went for a drive to get the engine up to normal temp and still the temp is riding at the C mark Heater works great! No bubbles in the overflow tank whatsoever=) Drives like a new car On my other 96 legacy with 259,000 I always just took the cap off, added fluid and was good to go?
  17. 96' legacy 2.2 l wagon, auto 97,000miles So ever since I got this car about a month ago my temp gauge has not worked properly. It almost always stays below or even with the C, and will occasionally climb about a 1/4 way between the C and the half way mark. I replaced the thermostat with a Subaru one about a week ago(the one I pulled out was aftermarket), and just replaced the coolant temp sensor today, with no luck. the only change I noticed was that with the old aftermarket thermostat the temp gauge would sometimes climb to normal operating temp(just below the half-way mark) but go back down after a minute or two and now it never gets above 1/4 way up. When I drained the coolant to do the thermostat I just pulled the plug on the bottom of the radiator and didn't remove the cap or bleeding screw, then pulled the lower hose to drain the rest. When refilling the coolant I just popped off the cap and added about 3/4 gallon tell it seemed full, then started the car and pulled the bleeding screw and let it run like that for 5 minutes and put it back in and went for a test drive. The next morning it was low on coolant so I pulled the cap and bleeding screw and added tell it seemed full. Then I searched for info on burping the system. so that night I parked on a hill, so the coolant could drain into the engine. The next morning I started the car up pulled the cap and bleeding screw and added until full, about a quart. Repeated this the next night/morning, but only added about 1/2 pint. Some drained out while replacing the temp sensor, so I jacked up the front end as high as it would go, started the car, pulled the cap, added fluid, then pulled the bleeding screw and added fluid until it was sort of fountaining out of the bleeder hole, put the bleeding screw back in and the cap back on. went for a test drive, and nothing changed. I don't feel comfortable driving it not knowing what is going on with my engine temp. At this point I'm stumped, and probably going to take it down to the mechanic. Unless there is something else I can try?
  18. Good to know! Now hopefully this is the case with my front diff, when I change out the fluid as well.
  19. So when you got the car scanned the check engine light was ON but not flashing? Did you use an aftermarket thermostat or a Subaru thermostat? Its possible that you just have air in your coolant system, I guess these engines are notorious for trapping air. I'm struggling with burping the coolant system myself, so hopefully someone else will chime in who can shed more light upon the subject. If you haven't got it scanned since the check engine light was FLASHING, I would suggest to do so and post the code's here.
  20. Hey guys and gals, when I swapped out my rear diff fluid the other day I noticed a small amount of metal shavings on the drain plug. Just wondering if it is normal to see a small amount of shavings from wear over time or if this is something that could cause future trouble? The car is a 96' legacy l wagon with 97,000miles. I don't think it had ever been changed before, but I'm not certain. There is no noise or anything and she drives quiet and nice as can be. I think she'll go for many trouble free miles. What do you think?
  21. Do you have a check engine light on? Have you checked your coolant level? Is it a legacy 2.2? Any visible fluid leaking?
  22. Congrats!! Yeah, if they replaced the head gaskets and the timing belt you should be good to go for another 100,000. I don't think you'll ever have to worry about the head gaskets again, if they did the job right. These cars are engineered very well and will take a beating and go well beyond 300,000. I had a friend in WA that had 360,000 on a 96' with very few issues. I know its a new car, but don't be afraid to drive it like a Subaru (they love getting snowy and dirty.) Just don't forget you have an interference engine and it is important to do the timing belt in another 100,000 or less. Is it an automatic? Cheers mate, and enjoy that Subaru.
  23. Su bah roo'n, thank you so much! I just ran outside and checked it out and sure enough while I was searching for the coolant temp sensor I must have disconnected one of the vacuum hoses that goes to the engine, oops. Got it hooked back up and hopefully all is well. That helped tremendously, back to work now. I'm gonna be day-dreaming about Subaru's while I paint lol.
  24. Had my buddy scan it for me, here is the code: P0106 Map Sensor Manifold absolute pressure barometric pressure out of range. It cleared, and my check engine light is off now. My temp gauge still won't climb above the C. He suspected that I have air in the system. I have a Temp Sensor on the way, but i'm not confident that will fix my problem, and am leery of driving it with the temp gauge not working. I will do another trans drain and fill in the next day or so and see how much comes out, hopefully only 4 quarts this time, idk what is going on with it. anyone have a link for how to burp the coolant system? Much appreciated.
