I own a 1998 Outback Sport, A/T, with just 35,000 miles. For the past few months, I have had intermittent trouble getting into 2nd and 3rd gear. Instead of shifting up, the engine just revs. The problem does not seem to be getting better or worse as time goes by. Sometimes, I can manually shift to 2nd, but often this does not work for 3rd. I let a transmission specialist have the car for a week. He is pretty sure that it is an electrical problem as opposed to a mechanical one because he said the gears aren't slipping, but he hasn't been able to diagnose which sensor is malfunctioning. My computer isn't storing codes, and he has had difficulties getting the car to act up while he has the equipment on it since the problem only occurs about 1 out of 10 times. I had previously taken it to the dealer, but they seemed to want to replace the whole transmission (surprise, surprise). I would be grateful for any suggestions!
