  1. I happen to have some CLR, brake fluid, yellow headlights, and some time this weekend. I'll give it a shot and let you know next week how it goes. I wonder what happens if you mix CLR and brake fluid? Anyone else want to take on that task?
  2. So, this may be a stupid question, but did you all do the inside surface as well as the outside? I tried prying a clip off my headlight to get to the inside and the plastic clip just shattered. I stopped there. If it's not necessary I won't even try it.
  3. I bought a 93 L sedan, automatic with the 2.2 engine, 2 years ago in much better condition for $2500. I would hold out for something in better shape. I think (Others on the board, correct me if I'm wrong) you'll spend more $$ fixing the tranny and other hidden problems than you would if you just got a better machine. Mine is an automatic and I am an agressive driver (Most people grab the oh hell handle and curse the first time they drive with me. From then on they offer to drive for lunch. Saves $$ on gas.) I don't miss the stick at all. I came from a Saturn SL2 with dual overhead cams and manual transmission. I have also test driven many of the newer cars in the same class just this year: Pontiac Sunbird, Cavalier, Ford Focus ZX3, Saturn L300, 2005 Saturn ION, Mitsubshi whatever it is, Mazda 3, Toyota Corrolla, VW Jetta, and the only one with more Gutspa than my auto Subaru was the VW, the ION, and maybe the L300. These cars were all 2000 or newer, none with turbo. I suggest waiting for something better to come along. And I agree with the other poster, don't swap for a stick unless you can get this thing for $500 and are willing to put in the long term heartache and pain.
  4. I would add that you should change the oil pump and/or seals while you are in there.
  5. I don't know about singing, but I think if I tap the gas just right I can get it to whistle the theme to "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". It wouldn't surprise me if it was the airbox. The previous owner lost the factory screws apparently and used plastic strap ties to seal it. I haven't bothered to change the method, I just torque it down real good. I'll get the screws from the dealer or junkyard, get a factory air filter and give that a shot. As for the MPG, I commute 50 miles to work every day for a daily total of 100 miles. All but about 5 miles are on the freeway. I typically stand on the gas, so I guess I'm doing alright. Thanks for all your help!
  6. Tough to tell. When I have looked for the whistle in the past it just seems to come from everywhere, very difficult to pin down. I suppose I could briefly plug the exhaust and see if the whistle changes...you think?
  7. Hello! I am new to the board and look forward to being around for a while. I have a '93 Legacy L with 160,000 miles. It does pretty well, but there is a whistle when it is cold and when the engine is around 1800-2200 RPM's. I searched through about 15 pages of posts w/o finding anything before deciding I'd better get back to work. The guy at the dealer parts counter blamed the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Convenient since it costs $283.00. I changed the PCV already. I am getting 27 MPG and think I should be getting better than that. Just did a tune up. If 27 mpg is pretty standard for this car I'm ok with the whistling, but I am concerned about a vacuum leak or other performance degrading problem. Any idea's? Thanks for any help you can offer.
