  1. My 1987 subaru has ripped the bags on its factory air ride suspension. I have sucsesfully converted the front to coil overs, but im having some trouble with the rear. I see many options for rear shocks but I dont know if I actually need the coil spring to go with. Since it was only the front bags that ripped, i have the car set up so I can fill the back bags manually. However, it is extremly inconvienent because the still leak and at different rates so everyother day I have to fill them with air. Any help is appreciated.
  2. When you talk about the 510 I assume you are all talking about the Datsun? As far as the clutch wear.....I assumed it pretty much toast. I'd like to say I'm not a beginner with cars but thats not for me to decide! Whatever I lack the krusty locals make up for. So if I was to tackle this rebuild, where could I find the parts and about how much would I spend? would it be cheaper to put in a new diff?
  3. I am fairly new to the subaru scene but fell in love with mine after I drove through two feet of fresh powder snow with absolutley no problem or hesitation on semi-bald tires! My question is....what is the diff locks function? Mine seems to work half the time. The light come on the dash when I turn the switch and I hear the click underneath the car and then the light goes off but then I dont hear the second click. Then I turn the switch back off and I hear the click again. Now the lsd. I am framiliar with its function however I do not know how to check if it is working properly. I know there is a way to adjust the "preload" but I don't know how or if I should. It had the proper amount of fluid but the car left me stuck last winter several times when it shouldn't have so I am slightly puzzled. Seeing as the car has over 250k on the odometer I figured it was best to check these things out. any help appreciated.
  4. The car sucks oil, leaks coolant, is rusting on the fenders, has tons of dents, cracked windshield, over 250,000 miles collapsed shocks, and much more. I love the thing to death its a beast in the snow but I dont trust the motor any longer and if I put any real time into the car it will be pulled apart all the before mentioned things fixed and an ej swapped in. Im actually trying to see what he motor can take in its current form before it blows so I can have a reason to do my ej swap!
  5. A while back I had several replies to topics that I posted that succsesfully took my 250k plus 1987 subaru GL-10 from montana to North Dakota and back in -40 degree weather enough times for me to buy another vehicle. Now I believe its time to let the old snow crawler go out with a bang. I would like to turn it into the ultimate woods thrash wagon before it gives up the ghost. So how can I get the most power out of the old turbo ea82 for the cheapest. reliability NOT required!
  6. Very cool. I do love to tinker so this is all fun for me. Luckily the belts look brand spankin new. I bought the car about 10,000 miles ago and i couldnt remember if the previous owner had said whether they had been replaced recently. Looks like they had. So lets see if i can baby another 1500 miles out of her! After that i think its just grocery runs and general woods malarky for the old snow beater.
  7. Thank you for the quick reply, ill take a look into it.
  8. Well its that awful time again where i may be forced to drive my ea82t with over 250,000 miles on it on a long road trip. Though not of my choosing it must be done. I have never done the timing belts on this motor and wondered what the process entailed or whether they could be checked before hand so i wouldnt have to replace them.
  9. I new I liked Subaru. I have been watching many other forums of vehicles that hold my interest, but none have the kind of loyal and helpful fans the almighty scooby does! Allright.....I have much to think about. I put in a new Oxygen sensor because i cant stand having exposed wires, but as I am the tinkering type I will go through the motions and see what I come up with. Thank you all who chimed in for your help. I'm sure I will need more advice in the future.
  10. Yes cap and rotor are new. Exaust has been gone through, MAF cleaned, and I checked all the vaccum lines yesterday and failed to find leaks though I wasnt to complete. I did see however, that the wire leading to the oxygen sensor was crimped at the base. I moved the wire a bit to get a better look and the car wouldnt start. Moved it back and she fired. So i think i found my culprit.
  11. I will test the fuel pump out as suggested as soon as I can. I have a fully equiped shop available to me at different times so this shouldnt be a problem. I recently drove the car 2000 miles with a broken axle.....quite scary. Not to mention it started in -50 North Dakota! But the subaru pulled through. It has been maintained as best as I can manage. The plugs... air filter.... and cap are new. Maybe the oxygen sensor could be the culprit? I pulled the plugs today and they were white, making me think lean. Im out of my element with fuel injection, Im a carb guy. Can anyone point out where the the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump are located?
  12. Its the 5 speed with turbo. Ive also replaced the fuel filter and plugs. The engine has high miles but i dont know how many. The odometer doesnt work correctly so it safe to assume over 200,000. However it runs cool, and doesnt burn oil or coolant. Its the multi port fuel injection.
  13. Hello all. I am brand new to this forum but a very happy owner of a 1987 subaru GL-10 in its middle stage of decomposition. After second gear i cant seem to wind the motor past maybe 4300rpm and while its there its gutless and acts like a lack of fuel. The fuel pump is in good working order and the motor runs cool. Any help would be appreciated.
