  1. Hello.

I was a real Subaru freak years ago, and this last weekend I discovered a fossilized 1983 Subaru Brat.

    - Why do I say Fossilized?

This poor specimen had obviously been almost completely neglected if not abused for DECADES.

It had a fine red dust encrusting EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE, EVERYWHERE, EVERYWHERE; Every tiniest place, inside, underneath, behind, etc.  When I went to start cleaning this thing up, I discovered that the dust over time had apparently become solid, almost like sandstone.

This was not hardnened mud, this was a loose, very fine red dust that had compacted over time until it had become sedimentary.

I was using a very stiff grout brush, the kind that can take your skin off, and had to use heavy scrubbing action, to even wear it down.

Some times it would actually chip apart, but most of it could not be broken up or removed from the surface it was on without breaking the original platic underneath. I had to essentially wear and grind through it with that grout brush. We are talking about heavy-arm heavy scrubbing for minutes just to clear a small area.  There was much less on the outer body, most of it was on the interior unfortunately.

So.... being that this Subaru was litterally found encrusted in sedimentary deposits, that qualifies it as a "Fossil".

    - At least as far as I'm concerned, lol.

  2. Need a pic of what your taking parts off of because it could be either a 2nd or 3rd gen which is a huge difference.

There are actually 3 generations of the old stlye Subarus - the 78-81/82 original (brats, for instance), then there are the 1983/84 style 2nd gen, and then there are the last of that style, 1984-1986 I think, where they have the dual square headlights behind plastic lens. After that came the boxy ones like legacy, etc.

As far as I can figure, not having a picture, this would be that 2nd&1/2 gen with the dual square headlights in plastic lens/cover/housing/etc

. - most likely like the one pictured in your link:

    1986 hatchback http://www.ultimates...door-hatctback/

  3. 2wd rear brake shoes and cylinders, backing plate.....will be the same.

    Not much else.

Carb can bolt on but will be different.....need whole intake manifold to do it.

Seats are 1 -/16" inch wider between the rails.......a few pieces of steel with hole can adapt that.

    not much else really.

Fuel pump will work.....Alt....I don't think so......too small but not sure.

Oh no! You sound like you know exactly what you are talking about, but it surely cannot be true!

What about the intake manifold AND carb? Will the manifold bolt on?

If I remember, this model (85 GL 2WD) would still have the 1st/2nd Gen type motor, (without timing chain). The only real difference would be whether the engine is a 1600 or an 1800, - right?

I am confused, maybe a typo? you state: "Seats are 1 -/16" inch wider between the rails" - was that supposed to be 1/16" or 1 1/16" ???

A 16th" could be taken care of with a little drill routing.

  4. I have an opportunity to possibly strip whatever I want from a 1985 2WD Subaru GL.

Some few things will fit, obviously, but I am wondering what all might bolt-up that I might not consider.

Aside from engine, wheels, etc. what can cross over?

need a Carb and seats really bad, so I hope those will fit. but what
about any of the interior, like the carpet, door panels, etc.?

would guess that some of the other items under the hood might work,
such as alternator, fuel pump (Yes, I know some subarus have that tucked
back by the rear wheels), waterpump?

I presume that the dash will not work at all, either for fit or for electrical hook-ups, although I would love to if I could.

I also presume that the front end parts, such as the grill, headlights, etc will also not fit/bolt-up. - am I wrong???

I will have to know by this coming Wednesday,
the 23rd, as that is when I will be able to do the stripping, so I may
post this in more than one forum, because I really need to know, and I
really need to know now. Thanks.

  6. Hello.

I was a Subaru fanatic back before it was cool. Owned 7 different 1st/2nd Gen subarus in total.

I off-roaded the hell out of them, rebuilt them from the ground up, stripped them to the last screw if they could not be saved.

My last Subaru was in the year 2000, I just bought the one model I loved most - the "T-Top", a 1983 Brat.

I want to use everything I have learned on this Brat and dress it up.

I really wish we could still buy those Japanese smog engines with less than 50,000 miles for $350.00

I once had a chance to get one that was a racing engine with dual carbs; wish I had, wish I had, wish I had, lol....

    - I might still with this one, except I imagine that those engines ar no longer available, at least for anything like that price!
