2003 Legacy engine swap 251->253
I recently blew my stock engine which is an EJ251. I just picked up a low milage engine out of an 09, which I believe is an EJ253 with Variable Valve Timing. I was told swapping my heads and intake will work, but from reading some of other posts, I'm not so sure. Some say that the pistons are shaped differently and hit the valves of the 251 heads. Some say to just leave the 253 heads on and keep the VVT disconnected. I'm not really sure what to do here. Any help is appreciated!

97 Impreza manual trans won't shift into reverse
I did a tranny swap a week or so ago and then the car sat in the garage a few days while I was on vacation. I drove it before hand And had 0 problems. On the way home I did blow a ball joint how ever but that problem is now taken care of. I can shift into all of my other gears, but cannot shift into reverse. Please help! I can't be without a vehicle!

1998 Legacy OBW Clutch fork issues
its_masters replied to its_masters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI will have to look, i believe it may have been a cable clutch. It didnt come with the fork so im not positive. How does one get the pivot ball out to move it?

1998 Legacy OBW Clutch fork issues
I'm swapping parts from my 98 trans to my 97 trans (doing a drivetrain swap), and the clutch fork doesnt seem to want to stay in place. It seems like the clip slips off the pivot ball. I had this problem last time as well, the TOB would slide too far off the shaft. I was told to get an 06+ fork, but that involves a new fork, TOB, and pivot ball, and i dont really want to spend the money for that...

2011 Impreza WRX transmission noises?
Every now and again my buddies tranny (or in that general area) makes a noise like your going over a rumble strip and then makes a popping noise. Im thinking it's either the CV joint or a U joint. Can anyone confirm this? I just wanted to make sure it isnt a common issue that i missed. Thanks in advance!

Weird grinding noise when in gear. 1998 Legacy OBW

rear differential compatibility for a 99 outback?
its_masters replied to 1997reduxe's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs said above, as long as the ratios are the same as the tranny, the diff will work. I just bought a new tranny with a matching diff to put in my outback from a 97 impreza.

1998 Impreza RS Trans into 1998 Legacy Outback
its_masters replied to its_masters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYepp. Planned on doing all that while i have it out. I've replaced one of those separator plates in a different subaru already, the darn thing was cracked all to hell and leaking everywhere in there. The upgrade helped out a lot. I don't have any trusted machinists around here anymore (they managed to destroy my previous flywheel and still tried to charge me) so if i have to get the flywheel resurfaced, i may just buy a new one unless a different shop has popped up since then. So talking about gear ratios, how will the 3.90 be compared to the 4.11? I can't imagine much, but is there anything should expect?

98 EJ25D w/ 97 Impreza L Trans & Clutch Question
Would i still use the proper clutch for the EJ25D that i would normally if i have a 97 Impreza L Trans installed? Or would i have to go a different route? Also, will this trans mount up to my drive axles and rear drive axle?

1998 Impreza RS Trans into 1998 Legacy Outback
Will it fit? I know it'll bolt up to the engine, but will my driveshaft be ablto occupy it? Same with the CV's? I also have a rear diff from that L as well. The trans in my car is dying and this trans is still good same with the rear diff... Please for the love of God tell me that they will work in my Legacy OBW. UPDATE ITS A 97 IMPREZA L THAT THE PARTS CAME FROM

Weird grinding noise when in gear. 1998 Legacy OBW
its_masters replied to its_masters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCar goes into gear just fine, and yes I do hear it all in all gears. My linkage feels fine, not too much play. Looks horrid, but other than that okay. My supervisor told me it probably is that mainshaft bearing

Weird grinding noise when in gear. 1998 Legacy OBW
its_masters replied to its_masters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe oil looked like it had never been changed before or at least for a long time. Which I'm sure it didnt as the car sat for a while. Also looked and smelled burnt. No metal shavings or anything that I recall seeing

Weird grinding noise when in gear. 1998 Legacy OBW
its_masters replied to its_masters's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGood question. The ODO stopped at 103XXX. It was working when i test drove it, but it and the speedo quit during the drive. I replaced the speed sensor, so the speedo works but not the odo.

Weird grinding or scraping noise when in gear. 1998 Legacy OBW
I have a 98 Legacy OBW. 2.5l 5 speed manual. When i'm in gear, either accelerating, or decelerating, I hear a grinding noise coming from either my wheels (sounds like front, but sometimes rear) or my drivetrain. If i press in the clutch, or put it in neutral and just roll, I don't hear it anymore. I just did my front brakes, and I took care of any rubbing up there, I did a gear oil change in november, and have since been trying to figure out my issue. I'm thinking it's the CV's but i'm not sure. The boots aren't torn from what I can see. I'm hoping it isn't my transmission or center/front diff. My heat shields are also loose, and I have told that they could be rubbing on something, but I'm not sure if thats the issue or not. Any help is appreciated! Thanks for reading!
