  1. Spot on. It looks like the coolant system had not been flushed in a very long time. We clamped the larger hose over for the time being but it is clear that even the radiator hoses will need to be changed soon, definitely before winter. Anything else I should consider? Knowing that the cooling system was neglected for some time?
  2. We found the source, a "pin-hole leak" in the pipe for the small heater hose. Can we get replacement parts from subaru? My mechanic said if not he would try to clamp a larger hose over the whole connection.
  3. Thanks for the tips. I'll get a good look at these things in the daylight.
  4. 150,000 miles. I only put 8,000 on it myself. Hmm, I could check where the heater hose connects.
  5. Hey all, So my little '97 impreza has been a great car to own for the last year. One minor issue that I sef-dagnosed as a loose timing belt tensioner was causing a "ticking" mostly on cold starts but would be fine after the car warmed up. the car warmed up fine and ran steady temperature for the last year. Today coming home with my daughter in the car we both smelled a rather pungent smell at an intersection, my gauges were fine and I blamed my neighbor. Then a quarter mile later, just as we pull on to my street, the temp needle starts to climb rather dramatically. I stopped the car and rolled to my parking spot. I discovered coolant sprayed all over the firewall from the rear of the engine, driver side. Now I'm contemplating my choices. Do you think my "ticking" was something more serious? It appears as though I may have a blown head gasket, would that come on so suddenly? Anyways, I will probably either attemot to "nurse it" a mile or two to my mechanic tomorrow or have it towed depending on my situation. Let me know what youguys think. Thanks B
  6. Mechanic helped, used MAF sensor cleaner, "tightened" the pins and I'm back on the road. Fixed. Thanks for the help.
  7. So mechanic says bad MAF (just figuring out that I could own an OBD2 scanner). Says he can replace but will cost $37.00 for the sensor, whoa. Auto parts store has rebuilt for 207.00. Nearby junkyard has one inventoried for 35. Think I will take my chances for 35, maybe try a little refurbishing of the old sensor.
  8. Thanks Miles! popped off and didn't see it. Of course now it starts up idles fine but stalls when i get over 3000 rpm, check engine light is on now. Can't wait to find out what I broke just trying to do something so simple.
  9. Well I was anxious to start the tune up on my "new" 97 Impreza OBS. Changed the air filter and PCV valve (both pretty dirty). Now the car starts but stalls after a couple revolutions. I can keep it going with the throttle down, around 3,000 rpms, but stalls if I let up. I switched back to the old PCV thinking the gunk was somehow in pseudo-calibration with the engine, but it still stalls now. Any ideas what could be happening here? I was planning to do a tune up (change spark plugs and fuel filter this weekend) now I'm worried about my approach to the simple items.
  10. Hello. and thanks for receiving me. I've already learned quite a bit just in lurking mode. I recently purchased a 1997 Impreza Sport 2.2 with 150,000 miles and I'm determined to see that number double.
