  1. Hi Folks, My '95 Legacy L started getting loud. Noisy exhaust system revealed rear cat converter crack/hole where flange bolts to mid-pipe. Part on order - will attempt installation. Seems easy enough, unbolt/bolt in new part. Can I use the same O2 sensor? Any suggestions or pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanks in advance, jakl
  2. Hi folks, looking at '99 Legacy Outback with 53k at Subaru dealer. What are the pros and cons with engine and drivetrain, overall car impressions? Thanks to this web site ten months ago I bought a '95 Legacy L wagon with 65k. Love the car. Car now has 82k. Seats a little uncomfortable on long rides - a small trade-off for a great car. Thanks again for your help. jakl
  3. Thanks again for all the suggestions. I neglected to say this is a '95 Legacy L with single piston calipers. There is no way to retract the piston as you suggest - only push it back with a c-clamp. I'll keep you posted of outcome. Cheers, -jakl
  4. Thanks for your input... I especially like opening the bleeder valve while compressing piston - great tip! I'll first have to find a c-clamp large enough to span that distance. I'll keep you posted. Cheers, -jakl
  5. Hi Folks, I'm a bit confused. Where do I place the c-clamp when compressing piston into caliper? Do I put top part of clamp on the back of caliper and bottom part of clamp on the outer pad itself to compress? I read the posts and have the Haynes book with pictures - still unclear. Part of the confusion is the one piston caliper. I've done a dozen pad replacements on mercedes that have two pistons per caliper and compressed them independently. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated as I plan to do the job this weekend. Cheers, jakl
  6. Thanks Greg, Gary and Gerry, four calls later salesman claims he spoke to service manager. Claims there has been no rollback - mileage is accurate. Says previous elderly couple may have guessimated mileage when checking in for service and service manager never verified owner's numbers. Good news is he willingly suggested to get me the previous owner's number so I could call and inquire and feel more comfortable with purchase. I accepted offer. He'll call me tomorrow. I have visions of the salesman's father reading from a script to pacify me. I've become somewhat jaded. I work for the court system - my entire career I've watched people swear on a Bible to tell the truth and lie. I'll keep you guys posted - thanks for the guidance. Cheers, jakl
  7. Hi folks, it's official - I now own a '95 Subaru Legacy L wagon. After much research and running of Carfaxes, I located it an hour and a half away from home. Clean car. Subaru dealership upon request produced printout of service history from 2001. Major services performed - timing belt, water pump, etc. at around 58,000. New tires. Local elderly couple owned car from new - traded it into dealership. Slight scraping on side of front bumper - otherwise straight car. Car sold with 65,739 miles. During negotiations, salesman stressed what a low mileage car it was for a '95 - plus had service records from this dealership documenting services from 2001. Drove car home - love it - handled great. Today while scrutinizing service records and putting in chronological order - there appears to be an odometer rollback. 2/23/04 - 62,612. 3/10/04 - 65,413. 5/14/04 - 70,001. 6/11/04 - 72,000. 9/1/04 - 64,859. 9/9/04 - 64,860. 12/10/04 - 65,739! While I feel it's disingenuous on their part - if the listed services were truly performed - I will swallow hard and accept it. Would I have paid less? Maybe a little less - but I still would have purchased the car. I just would have liked to know the truth. At 9 a.m. today I'm going to call them and bring it to their attention - see what possible excuses they can offer. Any suggestions on how I should handle this? Cheers, jakl
  8. Hi folks, I've narrowed it down to two possible cars. This weekend I'll be checking out a '95 Legacy/OB 2.2L, 68,095, fully loaded. Also a '98 Brighton, 2.2L, 47,511, no ABS. There's about $1,000 difference in asking price between the two. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Cheers, jakl
  9. Hi folks, my first post. Thanks to this site I already avoided a '97 2.5L purchase. My question concerns 2.2L engines - are all years okay? I'm considering a '98 2.2L Legacy - any issues I should be aware of? Also located two '95 2.2L's. All three have low miles. Thanks for your help... Cheers, jakl
