  1. I am looking for a Legacy OB 96 A/C Compressor. I am located in Costa Rica and it is not available locally. Any suggestions as to the most economical seller in the U.S. either new or refurbished. Thanx, Eduardo
  2. Indeed, you can find additional information by searching under the term "torque bind" in this forum. I also found information through Google.com search engine. Just install a 20 amp fuse which disables transfer of torque to the rear wheels. This fuse is located in the right side (passenger side) of the engine compartment. It is a little black box clearly labed "FWD". I have the same problem and I still haven't found the solution. Based on what I read thus far, the solution could be as simple as assuring the right tire pressure, changing the fluids on both diffs and the trannie, and as severe as replacing the "Rear extension housing" which contains the transfer clutch. It is my understanding that there was a design flaw in the 96 models which was fixed half way through 97. I have a 96 myself. Hope this helps. Eduardo
  3. I removed the Keyless Control Module and the problem went away. I think this Unit is toasted. I may replace it or just live without it. I've gotten used to it not working anyway. Eduardo
  4. Thanx Theotherskip. I installed the FWD fuse and the sound went away. I couldn't find anywhere the recommended amperage of the fuse. I installed a 20A fuse. Please advice. The next step is to figure out which component of the AWD was damaged. I will keep you post it. Thanx Again, Eduardo
  5. I would appreciate any recommendation as to the most favorable US-based online site to purchase Subaru Parts. The Subaru dealer in Costa Rica is very expensive. Could somebody expand/clarify the abbreviation OEM? Thanx. Eduardo
  6. Given: 1996 Subaru Outback 2.2 L Engine Automatic Transmission 100K miles Problem: I recently serviced the battery myself. When I connected back, the lights started fashing intermittenly for about 30 secs then a pause and back indefinitely, as if the car had the security system installed. In the past, under the same conditions, I had used the door power lock remote control to turn it off. However, the remote broke down recently. I had to remove one of the 15A fuses in the engine's fuse box to turn off the fashing. This flashing happens even while driving. Unfortunately, that fuse services the power lock and the power window systems. I tried locking and unlocking the doors (and the ignition) using the Master Key but it does not turn the fashing off. Any suggestions? Also, how does one replaces the door remote control? I checked that battery is placed correctly and that it measures 12V. Thanx again, Eduardo in Costa Rica
  7. Indeed, the whole problem started when one of the two rear tires (almost brand new) got vandalized and I replaced it with the worn spare tire. Not long after, the problem started. However, I have done rotation of tires and the problems persists. I assume that the damage has been done. I will try to take off the TCU fuse tonight . I will also doble check the joints. Thanks, Eduardo
  8. Hello everyone. My name is Eduardo and my wife and I own a Subaru Outback 1996 (Automatic Trans.) which I drove from California to Costa Rica in 9 days. What a great car !!!. It just turned over 100K and I have one problem that nobody in this country has been able to determine. I ordered the 1996 service manual because I have worked enough in cars that I could probably figure it out myself. However, they shipped me the 96 Service Manual Supplement. I have learned through this great message board, that one can go to techinfo.subaru.com and obtain a subscription for 72 hrs and download most of what I need. The problem manifests itself as follows; when I perform a very sharp 90 to 180 degree turn as when pulling or reversing from the garage, or turning right or left at a corner stop, a series of sharp "cloak" "cloak" "cloak" .... noises emerge from what it appears the rear half of the car. Again, this occurs only when making slow sharp turns. I had a competent friend mechanic check the rear differential and he said it had no signs of disturbance. I fear that it may be something related to the AWD's Transmission Control Unit. Any Suggestions?? Thanks, Eduardo in Costa Rica
