  1. Hey Guys, I got my 97 Legacy Outback MT with a 2.5 DOHC throwing a P0400. I've - checked and cleaned the egr tube going to the BPT. - checked all the vacuum lines and replaced them - replaced the BPT - checked the EGR solenoid - applying 12v it clicks - cleaned the EGR valve itself, verified it can open and close. - cleaned the little filter to the MAP sensor. So I can see the valve opening and closing when the engine is running. Here is a video: I'm out of ideas.....what else should I check? I was thinking replace the EGR solenoid next? Thanks!
  2. Umm, I haven't messed around with the cruise control. Manual Trans Yes, it did this before the swap.
  3. Hey Folks, I have a 97 Legacy Outback, with a brand new engine it. It has a strange quirk that I'm trying to figure out. When I'm coasting (winding the engine, injectors off) when I hit the throttle, the power sometimes comes on hard, rather than being smooth. Its pretty noticable in like 4th gear cruising along trying to keep the same speed. When it does this, I can slowly hit the throttle, nothing will happen, then all of a sudden the power comes on hard. Its has a new MAF, new TPS. No codes are thrown, I've checked for intake leaks, can't find any. Any other ideas?
  4. what direction does the check valve on the charcoal canister go? Arrow towards or away from the fuel tank
  5. Hey Ya'll I have a new to me 97 Legacy Outback with the DOHC 2.5. I keep getting a p0441 DTC. I'm running out of ideas, so any ideas of things to check, please chime in! - Checked all the vacuum line connections, trimmed off a bit on each end and made sure there's a snug connection. - Sprayed each connection with starting fluid -- no change in idle. - Checked the purge solenoid. When hot wiring, it clicks. - Checked the Vacuum Switch Valve Solenoid, resistance is 41ohms - Checked the gas cap, sealed tight. - Checked the filler neck connection, seems free of rust - Checked the check valve @ the charcoal canister, seems to work Its driving me nuts! Any other ideas to check? Thanks!
  6. But the engine was hitting something, and it would not turn over. THAT is bad. Have other people experienced this and the engine was OK??
  7. So I'll pull the timing cover, check timing, and do a compression test. If no side is 0psi, try to fire it up? Otherwise I'll probably pull the engine and go from there.
  8. Hey Guys, My new to me 97 Legacy Outback had a major fail today. I'm still trying to sort out what the problem is and how screwed it is. 162k miles, 2.5 DOHC engine. Unknown history. Been driving great for the past two weeks, then today it died. I was on the free way and all of a sudden it lost power. Related or unrelated, I heard a noise kind of like I was running over something and stuff was being kicked into the wheelwells. Temps were fine, no CEL. Pulled over, tried to restart it turned over for a sec and then stopped. Tried again and then like the starter was stuck. Engine would not turn over at all. Towed home and I drained the oil, no shimmering oil or bits in it. I peaked at the timing belt, still intact. I then tried turning the crank, would not go forward, but would move backward. I rotated it backward a few turns and now it turns freely. I cranked the engine and it wont start, and it popped a few times up the intake it seemed like and got smoke out the intake. Should I start shopping for a new engine? Other Ideas? I'm pretty frustrated and am giving up for the night.
  9. So I was driving it during lunch and i was doing it again and I was able to play with it before I hit a stop light and it died. On light throttle, the bucking is very light. I was holding 3k rpm and you could feel the power come on and off at like 1hz. If you went farther into the throttle, the bucking would get alot more rough, same frequency. I got some cleaner and a new gasket for the Idle valve, I'll clean it tonight.
  10. I have no history on the vehicle. Should I just do the timing belt and whatnot to be safe?
  11. Hey Folks, I got a new-to-me '97 Legacy Outback. 2.5 DOHC. 162k miles. Runs pretty good minus a few little quirks -- I'd love some guidance. - Power is inconsistent sometimes. I step on the gas and it takes a few seconds to kinda get going. Once it gets in the higher rpms (4k+ then it makes good power) - Occasionally it will start bucking on light throttle, and then not hold an idle. Car dies and I restart it and it works just fine again. - No codes are thrown, no pending codes. Things I've done: - New plugs/wires - replaced the MAF with another used one (so I'm not sure that tells us much) I have an OBDII scanner, but I have yet to be scanning it when it will start bucking and die, so I dont have much to go on. Was thinking O2 sensor? Thoughts? Thanks!
