Life expectency of struts
When I repair a car for customers, I recommend they replace their struts if an average weight man (150-200 lbs) can jump on any corner bumper and the reaction isn't down, up, stop. If it continues to bounce you risk losing control hitting a bump around a turn or in evasive maneuvers.

Changing brake shoes
Don't have any PDF's but what I recommend is do one side at a time. The drums can be turned, but only need to if there is obvious scarring. If it is rear disc & drum (like on a Legacy) you will need a special tool to retract the piston.

Something is broken...but what?
quocfixescars replied to nebmaster's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhile you've got it up in the air, you should inspect the drive shaft U-joint and carrier bearings. Recently my 88 DL wagon had the drive shaft go and it did something very similar. As far as the steering wheel problem goes, when a car is in the air the steering it will always sound different when turning. Check for difficulty turning at idle on the ground. With the car in the air inspect for the obvious (broken boots, slop, leaking red fluid)

Harmonic Balancer and Machine Shop
I plan on doing the timing belt and water pump while I have everything off. Would it be best to remove everything then have my car towed to a machine shop to place a "woodrift" key into the crank? My harmonic balancer is screwed up too, should I get a new one to show the machine shop first? You guys are the greatest, I was afraid I was going to have to get a new motor! Do you have any clue as to what happened? I suspect that it was because I had put the belts on too tight, but that was 5 months ago.

Harmonic Balancer
quocfixescars replied to jeelanik's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat uncanny timing?! I just had the exact same thing happen on my 93 Legacy. Anyway, I plan on doing the timing belt and water pump while I have everything off.
