  1. Could you please take a pic and post it? I attempted to attach a pic but it was larger than the 2MB limitations.... I'm trying to visualize the u shaped brackets tow bar to the car tow hooks/ eyes. This seems more practical and alot less hassle than removal /disassembly of my front bumper beam and skin in order to do the 3" channel mount and modification of the skin. Thanks Ed
  2. Thanks for the speedy replies Everyone. Good start of a thread regarding Old Gen Tow Bar issues and Optuons. This confirms this issue. Seems the tow bar option is a PITA. I would need to also do some front tow bar to Suby bumper / bracket fabricating while trying to maintain the stock bumper and skin appearance. What have you guys done? I have been on the fence regarding Tow bar VS Car Dolly. I have a Vstar 1100 that I would like to also travel with and would need to put a front deck across the front of the dolly. Storage of the dolly is the issue VS Tow bar. sparkyboy, the handle is from my Dad when I was 14yo.He had a 56 VW bug project in the backyard I decided I would help out on while he was at work. I forced some bolts into the 36 HP block..... and the rest is history ! He schooled me well afterwards. LOL Thanks All

  4. I have 1987 GL 5 speed manual wagon I want to be able to tow behind my 35' Motorhome. I want to be able to attach bumper mounts to receive the feet of the tow bar. Has anyone done this? I read on a 2014 FMCA reply that the camber is wrong on these old gen Subies and that does not allow the steering to return to center after a turn. This guy stated it was a well known issue back in the day.... Any input on this ? His solution was to install eye bolts in the floor on each side of the steering wheel, attach heavy duty rubber bungies thus assisting the return to center. He was then going to fiddle with the caster to see if he could correct the issue. There was no following update. I just scored a Road master 5000 tow bar the foot receivers are set up for a Chev Cruz Toad. It's 5K rated overkill for but a good deal. Thanks Ed
  5. Thanks Scoobiedubie. Gave him a call and he is checking his inventory. Cheers
  6. HA HA The gauge is my buddies he has used it through the years most recently on his Ford ranger. He can't remember exactly the readings but it did show differences and 0# on one hole so we are certain it is functioning. We think that due to the readings the motor must have been rebuilt at some point. Hard to believe cuz it was a pasty oily nasty mess when I started this "little 2 day project 3 weeks ago" Yes I am interested in what numbers you come up with. Cheers:)
  7. I have a 1987 GL Dual Range EA82 Hitachi stock Carburated wagon. I pulled the motor, resealed , Headgaskets, DIY head resurfacing, hand ground the valves. 286K miles sat for 3 years and had a rough prior life. found the vacuum advance unit defective (Different post). I did a cold compression test today. Airfilter removed, plugs removed, coil wire disconnected, and wide open throttle.the results astounded me. 140# in all cylinders with no deviation! Is this possible? I am hoping so . She runs great other than a blow by in the aircleaner issue which I will make a oilcatch can per other posts here on this awesome site.and of course the vacuum advance issue. Thank you:)
  8. Don't want to start a new thread but will if I get no reply here. Thanks all regarding my dissy. Did a cold throttle wide open ,no aircleaner compression test ... I got 140# on all 4 cylinders! I did have this apart did HG and the gaskets. I used the DIY method ie. Marble sink cutout used wd 40 and 220-320 wet dry sand paper. Worked great! Hand reground the valves. Is it a strange coincidence that all 4 cylinders are the same with no variances ? OR could it be my luck is up and I have a great lower end and block? Please let me know what normal is .. Mahalo

  10. Good advice ihscout54 and thanks TONGA. This is my 5th wagon and my 2nd dual range in a 15 year span.I owned other cars during this period. I guess I lucked out on my previous soobies. I always paid around $600.00 for them did waterpumps, belts, axels, and my last obe started to have HG failure so i put ground pepper in the radiator ran it for a year then gave it to my neighbor when I left for Hawaii and he drive it that way until last year when it was stolen and totaled while he was out hunting!! WOW. Well during the last 3 years I worked in Hawaii got laid off and moved back to the Mainland to find that prices on CL and everywhere have gone up. So when I knocked on a neibors door asked about the Soobie DR he said 300 bux I jumped on it. He had no idea about any issues as it was his sons 1st car and has since moved away leaving it behind. I am now finding out that these ol Subie are a challenge to get parts for. I bought a recon Chev 350 lifetime complete dissy for my Motorhome 2 weeks back for $142.00.Today when I called the stealership found out SOA didn't make these anymore. I began to feel age... I was hopin and needing this Soobie as my daily driver as they have been the best cars I have ever owned. This one has put me thru the ringer . Pulled the motor cause I couldnt get the melted timing covers off to do the broken TB.Then Ifound antifreeze in the head exaust. Did the posted DIY heads resurface which worked beautiful, reground the valves, regasketed the motor. At start up she leaked some water, still is from somewhere but stops when warmed up, hoping it's a waterpump. Leaking lots of oil at the aircleaner searched this site for Blow By and followed the fixes PCV valve hoes clean out, oil plugged air filter removed it and ran it yesterday with no oil. Today oil again. Thinking this ol motor is shot? Gotta love them Blues... Peace
  11. I am a new 3 week old member and have gleaned the posts , all are excellent! I originally posted this on the Meet and Greet forum.. Oops. I am doing the short version here as I'm not sure how to C&P with my phone. 1987 ( Manufactured 4/87) GL Dual Range 1.8 Ea 82 Carburated 286K. Sitting 3 years with a rough prior life. My Vacuum Advance Unit is a electronic non optical Nippon Denso 22100AA370 and the diaphram has a hole . I can blow and suck air with no function air passes both ways. SOA no longer makes the dissy or the VA unit.It is not available aftermarket. To rebuild it is about $300.00 via Cardone. I read on this site that dissys can be changed out Hitachi to ND as long as the coil is branded the same. Local junk yards are out of ol Soobies. Seems that if a remanufacture should be able to do the VA unit by itself for a smaller cost? Thanks
  12. Hello L I'm a new member 3 weeks old. I have bought a 1987 GL dual range wagon carburated had been sitting 3 years and has had a rough life prior.286K miles. Manufactured date is 4/87 so it is the early half year for some major Soobie changes.I've pulled the motor did timing belts, HG's,a engine reseal and ground the valves. The Chilton manual has some mistakes regarding the distributer testing. I referenced Bumblebeast various post for bench testing the ignition modules and the test showed that IM are good.ALL of his posts are all excellent.Thank you Sir! Well she is running, idiling, starting and stopping. The main issue now is that the vacuum advance is NFG no good. I have sucked on the vacuum hose that is directly connected to it with my mouth and it does not move the advance plate. I can suck air through it and blow air through it. It must have a hole in the diaphram. My dissy is a Nippon Denso 22100AA370 100291-1820 WITH 4620 stamped ID tag.SOA no longer makes these distributers or the advance unit. I have the local autoparts dealers that can send mine out for rebuild to Cardone for $300.00. This is beyond my budget.I have called the local junk yards but they don't have any Soobies. I read another post here that stated one can change the dissy from ND to Hitachi and visa versa but the coils need to be changed to match the appropriate dissy. All I need is a good vacuum advance for my ND. Any one have any suggestions? Thanks
