  1. Hey gnuman my phone is 415-812-9463. Although I'm in the middle of transitioning the number so it's possible it could not go to voicemail or something for a day or so. give me a call at your convenience
  2. Now that bad advice from a shop has ruined a significant part of my drivetrain I'm looking for someone who can actually tell me what is wrong! A recommendation and a shop that is actually expert on suby trannies and honest would be very useful. Even better would be someone who could do a house call for hire to give me options as I'd prefer not to drive/tow it w/out having some idea of what I'm facing. If anyone has an idea for either please let me know. Thanks
  3. So my trust 97 Outback with 150k miles has decided today was the day to die on me. The transmission had been making a whirring noise and the front wheels were binding on turns. No shop was able to identify the actual problem, but the most reputable seemign said that there was nothing to be done as it was probably a case of "cv joints" and that the "whole transmission would need to be replaced". Now the annoying noises have become unacceptable with huge screeches and seat shaking bucking at even moderate turns. So the first question is, does this seem like a cv joint issue? I'm thinking yes based on the location of the noise and the fact that the wheels just won't turn. Second question is if it is the cv joints, does one replace the "whole transmission"? Or just the cv's? Or do cv's even come with transmissions (as stated by the shop)? And then the big one, is it even worth doing? The quotes I'm getting run over $2k and there is an additional $1k of work surrounding oil leaks in the engine. As the car's bluebook value seems to be around $3.5k I have no idea what to do here. Any ideas about how to do a transmission cheaper? Or miracle fixes? Or what charities take sort of driving cars? Or how to get it stolen? Thanks in advance. Jeff
  4. I am looking for advice/ideas. I have a 97 Outback with 150k miles on it. The transmission was making some funny whirring noises and also binding on turns and the shop could only say "it needs a whole new transmission" and recommended that I continue to drive it until it died. Well it is pretty much dead now. Even a gradual turn now produces a screaching sounds and the car bucks like a bronco. I suspect it's the cv joints. If anyone can confirm this please let me know. The shop indicated that the "whole transmission" would also "include the cv joints" (once again I'm not sure of this and if anyone can help...). So a new trasmission seems to be around $2200. Their are also some oil leaking issues which are around $1000. So the total repair costs are almost what the bluebook is ($3700). Not a good situation. Any ideas on whether the analysis is correct? How to get a transmission done for less? Whether it's even worth it? How to get it stolen? Your thougts appreciated
  5. Hi. I'm trying to remove and replace the power antenna from my 97 outback wagon. It's stuck in the down position. There's a chrome cone that the top of the antenna is sitting in. I'm not sure what to do next? The chrome antenna is pretty flush and featureless except for one small hole. Does is screw off? Pry off? Do you even mess with the chrome cone? Or do you remove the antenna from the bottom without messing with the chrome cone? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff
