Bought this car a year ago off Craig's list for just 1550. Had 165K miles on it. Immediately got 4 new tires and had my Yakima Basket Case put onto the roof rails (saved the 2-piece OEM roof rack). Recently passed 202K miles.

  1. I immediately had hoses reconfigured to skip the heater core. Haven't been driving the car much and have saved enough to have the heater core and pipes replaced. My tranny just started hunting! Should I start a new thread?
  2. Thanks for your input, everyone. My car is a 96 Subie Legacy L with just over 200K miles. I bought it from the original owner about 100K miles ago, for just $1550. I think they were selling it cheap because they'd spilled a pot of curry in the back. That was easy to clean up, and it's been a great car! No upholstery tears or wear spots, no dash cracks or marks, great A/C. The only thing wrong when I bought it, was a little dent near the fill cap and too much oil per the dipstick.
  3. As soon as I turn up the temperature, even without turning on the fan, a grey-white oily mist starts blowing into my cab from the driver's side vent near the window -- not the defrost vent. My brother detected an odor of anti-freeze. Has anyone dealt with this? Thanks for any light you can shed!
  4. Thanks for the non-interference validation. I'm curious about three things. 1. I've found a Mizumo Timing Belt Replacement Kit on Ebay for $125. It doesn't include the water pump but it does include the hydraulic tensioner. Putting a water pump in my cart brings the total cost to $156. That's good, isn't it? A mechanic will be doing the work, not me. 2. The car dies, usually once or twice a day. But if I tromp on the gas it recovers. The Subaru expert thought it was electrical and replaced a v-shaped fuse thingie but that made no difference. Maybe it's a dying fuel pump? I put some B12 Berryman's in a one-quarter-full gas tank and drove it like I stole it. That was two days ago and the car has only died once since. 3. A Nissan mechanic hooked the car up to a computer and said there were no engine codes. That's good too, isn't it? Pictures coming soon.
  5. Hi JesZeK; Thanks for your reply. My car no longer smells like curry. I like curry, so the odor didn't bother me, but my sister-in-law thought it was bad. The dark splatter marks were what mattered to me. Oddly enough, I have no photos of my Subie! It's filthy right now, as you might imagine living up here in the mountains. I plan to wash and detail it this weekend and will send at least one photo.
  6. Bought a '96 Legacy L wagon with 165K miles for just $1550 and am loving it! I think it was that cheap because think the seller had hit a bump while carrying a big pot of curry -- the headliner and cargo-area carpet were splattered. A little elbow grease and it looks fine.
