  1. Just did the head gaskets on an EJ25, so I had to figure this out too. The Subaru tech manual specifies 18 N.m (= 13.0 foot pounds) for the bolts with Torx heads that attach the cam casing to the cylinder head. The also recommend a specific tightening sequence. To help with this, I uploaded a pdf copy of the relevant section of the Subaru Tech manual to rapidshare (a public file sharing service). You can download this at http://rapidshare.com/files/76884441/Camshaft.pdf Use the "free download" option; this is a four-pager with a file size of about 180 Kb, so this should be small enough to get even if you use 56K dial up. Use adobe acrobat to view/print the file. You can adjust valve clearances before installing the heads; the phase 2 ej25 engines (which is the one I just did) have screw type adjusters. Easy to set with a wrench, screwdriver and feeler gauge. The manual says clearances should be 0.20 mm for the intake and 0.25 mm for the exhaust valves. The older phase 1 ej25s used shims, which are another story - not sure what year engine you have. Hope this helps.
  2. I've recently joined the blown head gasket club with my 2001 Outback (EJ25 phase2 SOHC; about 115,000 miles). I've pulled the engine and I'm doing all the usual maintenence stuff as well (oil pump seals, new water pump, rear main seal, timing belt & tensioner, new clutch, etc.). I dissassembled the heads (removed rocker arms and camshafts) and took them to a machine shop to check for warpage, press in new valve seals, etc. My Subaru Tech manual recommends using ThreeBond 1280B (or equivalent) when reinstalling the camshafts/camshaft cover. I've searched the postings, but can't find any reference to this particular sealant. I know that Threebond 1215 can be replaced by Permatex 599, and I'll be using this to reseal the oil pump. What do you all recommend for the camshaft cover if I can't find Threebond 1280B ? By the way, these forums have been an invaluable source of information for this project. Thanks for all the assistance. I'll post a thead with some notes and observations about this project when I'm done, with links to photos. My next project is removal and complete overhaul of the EA82 in my 'old reliable' 93 Loyale, which now has 308,000 miles...
  3. I'm about to replace a clutch in a 2001 outback 2.5. Got an EXEDY OEM kit. I've done clutches in older subarus (back in the 20th century) - any tips about clutch replacement in the newer generation appreciated... 4. The clutch in my 2001 Legacy Outback 2.5L is beginning to slip in 4th and 5th gears at 80,000 miles. I usually get over 100,000 on clutches, but this one will need replacing soon. I've replaced clutches in my older Subarus (93 Loyale, 87 DL) and the job wasn't too bad. However, these were 2WD not AWD. I've got a shop manual and the procedure for transmission removal in the Outback looks similar to the one for the older models, except for disconnecting the propeller shaft to the rear wheels. I'd appreciate advice on 1) how tough a job is clutch replacment, compared to the older loyale models and 2) any useful tips beyond what's in the manual if I do tackle this. Thanks.
