With that many miles, it might be a good idea to change the trans fluid and replace the filter. No knowing when the last fluid/filter change occured. I'm not sure how good most lube places are with cars, I usually do the maintenance work myself (saves on fingerpointing), but if it is reputable, give it a shot. Personally I would go to a dealer, but they turn out to be more expensive for a simple fix up. Just my $.02 Good Luck and enjoy your new ride!

Just curious,
Does the speedo cable ALSO run the tach? I have a "sticky" speedo cable, but my tach is running just fine. On the other hand, I cannot seem to find a tach cable in my engine. Hmmm...
Oh well, time to DANCE!

IMHO, I think you've described a workload for an Outback. I am personally not too fond of them. Mostly because of Paul Hogan's "SpOrt Yutility" reference. (sentence fragment, you're my only friend ) SUV's suck and Scoob's have NOTHING in common with those gas hogs. Still, Outbacks are just Legacy's with some lift, bigger tires/wheels, and a 2.5 (I think?). If I were you, I would look for something with some decent (read:BIG) fog lights, and a roof rack too. Trust me, such things DO come in handy! Or you could just stick with your trusty 91. That's what I did Just my $.02 Peace out, yo.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've had to do this 3 times total over 2 different Leg's. Odd that I got so good at it that, with another person helping, I could get it in or out inside of a few hours! Let's hope I don't have to do it again any time soon Peace out, yo.

theotherskip,
I'm not sure if you need to pull the tranny first, then pull the engine, but I will say that with my AWD, I have pulled the tranny before (most recently for a cracked shift fork:eek:), and once I had it out, I could not help but to replace the clutch while I was at it. I know purchasing a new engine will be expensive, but you also might want to consider doing this too. Just my two cents. Good luck!

An interesting idea. My only concern would be the O^2 sensor on the cat. I'm getting a Cosmo Racing cone filter soon. Maybe I'll just go straight pipe like a friend did on her Blazer! Thanks!

Ok, probably a really st00pid question, but I'll ask it anyway.
I have a 91 legacy, with a regular exhaust, 2" off the catalyst. I would like to put on a more tuned muffler, however I cannot find a tuned muffler that has a 2" inlet. PLENTY of 2.5" mufflers of course. :madder: Anyway, would it be ok just to install a 2.5" inlet muffler with an I/O fitting to match the 2" pipe off my catalyst, or should I just go to a muffler shop and have them install all new piping from the catalyst back? Let me know what you think!

#1 - Check your shift linkage for sloppiness. if it is rattling, you may have a loose bolt somewhere futher up the linkage, rather than just near the tranny. Also make sure the bushings on the linkage are not worn out.
#2 - I have a 91 Legacy, so I cannot seem to find a short-throw kit for it, but I have heard that the short-throw gives the shift a more precise, sportier feel. I would love to install one, but I don't know if a 95+ kit would work in a 1st gen legacy. Anyway, hope all this helps.

Just playing Devil's Advocate over here...
I would think that the fact that he has gone out of business would be bad enough for the guy, despite the fact he was a bad mech. It might be better to just leave well enough alone, and have the hub repaired. Though, I could DEFINITELY see going back to this mechanic and have him at least pay for a new hub. After all, it is your personal property. Just my $.02
