Hello,
This is my firs post. This is my first subaru (2012 outback 2.5i, 6spd manual). I just hit 80k miles and my clutch throw out bearing exploded. The disk has relatively little wear, and pressure plate fingers are blue from heat. I just finished installing the new clutch, and all was going well, until I noticed that the plunger of the slave cylinder puts constant pressure on the fork, keeping the bearing in contact with the pressure plate fingers 24/7. I called subaru and spoke with a tech who said it is designed to do so. In my mind, this seems like a recipe for premature wear. I have little faith that this replacement will last any longer than it did the first time around. After searching around, it seems as though premature clutch/bearing failures and issues are not unfamiliar to many subaru owners. It is inconvenient enough to have to do the repairs myself (not to mention a $470 tab for parts), but I can't imagine having to drop 5-6k within the first 5 years of purchasing a new car (assuming 2 clutch changes). I am thinking about fitting a small spring to retract the slave cylinder plunger slightly to retract the bearing when the pedal is all the way up, but I really don't want to, or feel as though I should have to do as such. I guess I am just curious about others who may have experienced the same situation, and possible suggestions. I have considered buttoning her up as is and trading it in for another non-subaru. I have always preferred manual vehicles, and have always wanted a subaru, but I'm unwilling to go through this in another 60-80k miles.
Thanks
Jon
