On our 93 legasy it was abs that did that a couple times . we pecked on it and it quit.150000 miles later it hasn't done it againAt nearly 10 PM the car is making some sort of noise from the front end, and it hasn't been driven since noon. I've checked twice in an hour and it still makes that sound.1995 Subaru Legacy wagon. I've owned it for a year and have no history since it was a private sale.
I'm not a mechanic and am fairly naive as to the names of things I can see. That being said, the noise is coming from the engine compartment from a metal blocklike component in the very front passenger side. In my old Ford Crown Vic this was the location of the AC unit.
The noise sounds like a small motor running, has a mechanical cyclical whine to it, but I suppose it could also be interpereted as a hiss as well. I don't know what it could be, and I don't have any mechanically inclined friends who would have any better ideas, the mechanic is closed until Monday.
Anyone have this happen before?

Thanks for the reply I will clean all four of them and see what happens.

The metal filings can give false abs signals and trigger the abs light.
Sorry, I don't think it has anything to do with the transmission and torque bind.
Do a search on torque bind and try the fluid replacement first. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply. I think you are probably right, Pete

I have just changed rotors and pads on 95 legacy L and I noticed a lot of iron filings clinging to the abs sensors at the wheels. It appears to be touching the notched wheel that the sensor is supposed to monitor. Could this be confusing the transfer clutches , causing torque bind? I cleaned them (a little) and it seemed to improve the condition. However , the problem is not always the same severity. I could be reading more into it than there is. I would like to here from anyone with an idea one way or an other. Pete a very nubie.
