  1. Thanks ShawnW. Yes, the 6-pin connector I am able to tuck away. What about the other black wire that seems to go across? See the three yellow arrows pointing to this wire in the picture I uploaded. How to get this out of the way? Can this also be unplugged or simply pulled and tucked away? Did anyone had a problem with this wire while pulling out the fuel pump sender assembly?
  2. I have the same problem starting my 96 legacy wagon and I think it is the fuel pump. Removing the 8 nuts, wire harness and hoses on the fuel pump sender assembly cover appears to be straight forward. However, I see the black cable going across the fuel pump sender assembly cover under the hoses as seen in the picture. Before going any further, I would like to know: Will this cable come in the way when pulling the assembly out? Do I need to take any steps to get around it?
  3. I have the same problem (legacy wagon '96, 2.2l). Stalls or almost stalls. Tried everything that I possibily could (spark plugs, wires, iginition coil, all filters, all fluid changes, cleaning injectors, different fuel grades, brands etc). No luck. I stopped short of changing the cat, when the dealer suggested that as the next step for two reasons: 1) not absolutely sure that it was going to work 2) did not want to sink more $$$ just to see if it works. One of the things I noticed was that when I let go of the accelerator while going uphill once or twice, the problem does not occur. While this is providing some relief, I would like to get this permanently fixed. Any ideas or suggestions?
  4. 1996 Legacy Wagon 2.2L Auto, 113k - I get about 20 all local, 22-23 50% highway, and 28-29 100% highway. All OEM equipped.
  5. 1996 Legacy Wagon 2.2L Auto - I get about 20 all local, 22-23 50% highway, and 28-29 100% highway.
  6. The current starter is 9 years old so thought might as well replace. I got a good deal on a reman starter from the dealer. Tried to fix it, but the car too hot. Was in a rush. Took it to the corner gas station guy who charged just 50 for labor! The car starts fine now. It worked out well. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!!
  7. My 1996 Legacy 2.2L Wagon (Auto) has lately developed a problem with starting. When I turn the key it clicks. When I turn it on and off rapidly, it starts. It is getting worse by the day. The battery appears to be OK. I am suspecting the starter and would like to replace it myself with an aftermarket one to save a few dollars. Is it something that can be done without raising the car or getting underneath? Can anyone point to the instructions as the haynes I have makes it sound as not so simple? Are there any aftermarket ones that are good and not expensive? I appreciate any help that you can provide. Thanks in advance.
  8. I have the same problem with my '95 Legacy. It used to be intermittent for a while before it completely went out. I think it is the bulb. The only thing I could find in Haynes was how to remove the console cover. Nothing about the bulb or how to replace it. Where can I get more information or directions for replacing the bulb? I greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
  9. I replaced the wires with new ones when I changed the plugs. But one of them does not snap in to the plug with a popping sound no matter how much I push. It appears to be tight. You may be right that this wire could be the cause. I'll try again to see if I can get it to seat properly. Thanks.
  10. The problem started after replacing the spark plugs (new NGK EOM). When accelerating right after a cold start, the engine seems to misfire for the first 30 secs. Once the engine heats up, it is smooth. The problem is not seen, if I warm up the car first. Any ideas what it could be? Could it be the plug gaps? I am thinking of re-checking and adjusting... 96' Legacy Wagon 2.2L
  11. 25 mpg (mostly hiway) with 96' 2.2l auto. You should get slightly better with 5sp (everything else being same).
  12. Scott, The 25 mpg I mentioned was before the tuneup (plugs + wires). About 70% is hiway. I checked yesterday (first time after the tuneup) and there is no change in the mpg except that I think it runs little smoother. Air filter was changed only a month back.
  13. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I was able to complete the job by removing the battery & case and the washer tank, and by moving aside the intake manifold. Still had a tough time with the wires: two of them came off with the lead broken inspite of holding the boots. I was replacing them anyway, so this was not a problem. I guess the wires were too old! I used NGK OEM V-POWER plugs and Subaru wires. There is some differerence and the engine runs smoother (I don't think it is my imagination) I am getting 25 mpg now and I hope this gets better. Thanks again!! 96' Legacy, 2.2
  14. I coudn't agree more with Brian. But, if you want to save a few bucks, and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself, it may be worthwhile.... Yes, I did this before, but mine is a 96' Legacy, 2.2 Wagon. I am not sure if this applies to you...It took me a whole saturday afternoon and had to take out the cupholder, bezel, detach the heater cable, unplug wire harness and take out the climate control unit. Now begins the tricky part, to figure out how to get to the bulbs! , the parts in the control unit are very delicate. Things that look like they are fused together can be actually slid open, however this must be done very carefully and in the right direction. Once you figure out how (without breaking anything), the rest is easy with the stock bulbs as they come mounted on a base (cost little more). But if you want to go the extra mile and save more.. you can get bulbs from Radio Shack (12 volt mini bulbs) for less than a dollar. These must be mounted on the old base as they do not come with the bases. I did both (2 from the dealer and one from Radio Shack). One last piece of advise, if you are planning to do, make sure that you test it properly before putting everything back... I ended up repeating this again a month later as one of the bulbs was not lighting. It turned out to be loose and all I had to do was tighten it...Now it is almost 2 years and fortunately no problems... Good luck!!!
