Apparently my mums 1997 2.5 outback wagon started to make a lot of engine noise yesterday as she was running her errands. I don't have any more details than that, but it doesn't sound good. Could be a loose spark plug or much much worse. Dunno. She ended up leaving the car somewhere near Suffern, NY. I hope to take a look at the vehicle, but can someone please suggest an honest outfit (dealer or indy) that we can take the car to for diagnosis. Thanks in advance.

My mother is on a tight budget and needs a new clutch in her 1996 outback wagon (97k miles, not sure what engine). Her mechanic wants around $1000 to do the job. So my brother and I want to put one in over the Christmas holiday. He has done a clutches on other vehicles but asked me to find out if there are any design flaws or enything else that makes this job less than straight forward. So, for those that have doen this job: It this a straghtforward drop the tranny and replace the clutch job? (we would do it off ramps in the garage) Any special tools needed other than the alignment tool? Any difficult to reach nuts or intricate wiring to keep track of? What seals etc should be dealt with at the same time? If anyone can provide Haynes manual or alldata.com instructions on what all is involved - that would be too cool. Here goes: I posted a bit ago about some problems with my newly required 1995 1.8L Impreza wagon with 140K miles. Needs: Center pipe - not finding cheap source - please suggest ($200 at dealer) Rear Brakes (rotors and pads) - found for $60 total (http://www.all-foreign.com/) Numerous oil leaks need attention Oil Leaks details: Previous poster suggested that the oil filler gasket leaks are common - yup, this is true for this vehicle. Valve conver gasket appears to be leaking a bit - I will replace this along with rubber washers per previous posts. Anyone tell me the valve cover gasket torque? Should I purchase these from the dealer or elsewhere? More leaks: There appears to be a significant leak on the back of the engine (fire wall side) on the passenger side at the level of the valve cover gasket. See pics. The first pic shows the layout of the engine and the general location of the leak. the Second pic shows some kind of thing that looks like a filter - there is a leak just below that which seems to be producing the biggest problem (i.e., SMOKE when driving). Sorry the pictures to not show the exact location of the leak! Can anyone fill me in on what part of the I am looking at? What could be the issue in this area? THANKS!

Hello all. This is my first post to this board. I recently purchase a 1995 Impreza wagon L AWD with 139K miles. Very nice car overall (cost me just $600), but there are some issues. I will have to do the rear brakes and some muffler sections. Still need to get under the car to see what sections of pipe are needed, but can anyone suggest a site for good and cheap replacement parts? Biggest problem with the car is that there is motor oil leaking onto the exhaust just under the tranny - I think it is where the two header pipes join. I need to get under there and degrease etc and look for the trouble spot, but I was wondering if there is a common gasket or other failure that would cause this problem? Thanks for your input.
