  1. to check for spark on my old subie (not at the plugs though)i just stuck a screw driver (wear heavy gloves) in the lead and held it a couple of millimetres above something metal that doesnt mind a bit of electricity. If you see pretty lights, you have power to your plugs. Then check plugs i guess. If your sure you have fuel.
  2. driving through large puddles of water at speed, awd will more or less drive straight through, you dont get that 'pull' on your steering wheel that you will experiance in a RWD vehicle, im sure this can only mean that its much safer to drive in the wet in an AWD vehicle. If you were forced to leave the road at speed and stick a couple of wheels in the dirt beside the road awd will definately be an advantage.
  3. Ill get a pic of it this weekend and post a link, my whole family has been through it, Dad had it from new, then my sis, now me. Its in fair nic too, seats are all still ok, although the driver seat has been replaced. dash is all cracked, everything still works fine in it though, and i still have the original user manual and service books hahaha.
  4. i have a subaru 1600, 70's model wagon, original motor, dont know about the clutch and what not though. It has now done 1,195,000 km's and still runnning. Its burning a lot of oil these days, but hey it can consume as much as it likes as far as im concerned, its more than earned it. Even survived hitting a kangaroo at 110kph, this car refuses to die.
  5. Does the tire tread thing apply to manual transmission cars as well? I have a 96 Lx AWD 5MT, the rear tires, although the same brand and model of tire are worn a lot more than the fronts, looks as though they were replaced/ fronts moved to the rear, and fronts replaced with new tires. The wear would easily be more than 1mm worth of tread depth difference, will this affect my car? looks like its been this way for a while now. dont want to kill the thing, or do any more damage. Another point, i bought the car from quite a good used car lot, that only deal in subaru. They gave me a warranty, i had the vehicle inspected, which they were happy to do. Very friendly, didnt hide anything etc. One would think that if it were a problem, they would have fixed it, they did do a major service on the vehicle when it entered their lot. I also had another inspection just prior to the warranty running out and nothing was said about it. Im a little confused.
  6. But i live in Australia, so freezing isnt much of an issue, and i have never noticed water build up in there, probably will now though. Actually come to think of it my 96 liberty (legacy) has a sheild at the top of the window to prevent water getting in there, or at least thats the way it seems.
  7. Another benifit, in my eyes is the fact that if you can drive a manual vehicle every day of the week, in an emergancy, when the only car is a manual you wont be standing there saying "but i cant drive a stick" If you can drive a manual you can drive an auto, but not always the other way around. And you learn to appreciate the way a cars gearing works as well, if you ever got into an emergancy in an auto, and you have driven manuals a LOT, you will have more control over the vehicle (manually downshifting etc). And again, much more fun.
  8. I got a 96 Liberty AWD 5spd (legacy) about a month ago, its my first subaru and so far its great. As for stereo stuff, i straight away removed the tape deck and put in a single CD unit, i also replaced the front 5" splits with some 6" JL splits, the difference is awesome. The stereo consists of a lot more, but i will try not to bore you with the details. But have a serious think about upgrading to a much better speaker, not just adding another cheap component to your audio setup. Not many factory stereo systems are quality products, im not saying that all are junk, just most arent up to par with fairly priced aftermarket products, therefore the extra few dollars you spend on quality made speakers may be a wise investment. Make sure you re-wire them if the factory wiring looks a little aged or dodgy, wiring can make a lot of difference as im sure your probably already aware. Thats what i would do anyway.
  9. Hi guys, im new to the board and would like a bit of help with buying a new car. Im looking at getting a Forester in the next couple of months, im in Australia too if that helps. Basically i just want a bit of feedback on what the best model (pre 2000 and non GT) is, what to look out for, and any thing else i should know before buying one. Thanks, Adrian
