  1. Hi guys, I have a 95 Subaru Impreza 5 speed with a 1.8L engine, and I'm wondering if it's possible to bump the timing up a couple of degrees. It has stock ignition which is distributorless so I have no idea how to approach this, or if it is even possible. Thanks Samson
  2. Thanks Cougar, I have a book, and what ever the stock ignition is is what the car is running, so distributorless is probably more correct. MilesFox the moduale is something I realy don't want to change($200) unless I have to. I swapped a used one out from another subi for a couple of weeks and still had the same starting issues, so I'm pritty sure it's not the moduale. Aside from the plugs, wires, and the moduale is there anything else in the ignition that would crap out. I was thinking mabye a new coil, but do coils every really die? Thanks Samson
  3. I've been having a mysterious hard starting issue which you can read about here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31436 If you don't read the thread, basically the car cranks. but won't start sometimes(ussually when hot). If I push start it, or let it sit long enough, it starts everytime. Well if finally gave up the gost and has been sitting for two days and won't start. I pulled a plug and got no spark. So I figured I'd change as much of the ignition as cost effective and do the cam and crank sensor too. Aside from plugs and wires, what else do you thing I should change? It's a 95 impreza 1.8 with direct spark ignition. Thanks guys. I hope I can finally put this mystery to rest. Samson
  4. About it being the starter or solanoid: 1-it doesn't sound like it's cranking any slower when it's warm, 2-sometimes after the 4th or 5th try (before getting out and pushing it) it'll start right up while the gas pedal is depressed (even though it was depressed all the other times too).
  5. I'm not so sure about it being battery related because I would think it would be harder to start after it sat for a while(battery drains), but I haven't tried jumping it so I'll give it a try. About the ignition, it has a direct spark ignition, no cap or rotor. Just an ignition modual or sorts, a coil(I beleive) and wires. And I tried replacing the modual(a credit card sized box that cost close to $200) and when it still had the problem I put the old one back on and returned it:D Thanks for the ideas? Samson
  6. I'll check into it. I just find if funny how no mater what I can always push start it. One mechanic I was talking to about it said maybe it's the fuel pump relay. Any other thoughts? Thanks Samson
  7. I've read a bunch of posts about hard-starting Subarus. With the posts, I pretty much narrowed it down to the coolant temperature sensor because the car starts every time after it's been sitting awhile and is cold, about 25% of the time when it's hot at operating temperature, but seems to never start on its own when it's kind of warmed up. When you turn the key, it cranks but just doesn't fire up. When this happens, after a couple of tries, I get out, push it, pop the clutch, and I'm off and running. I changed the coolant temp sensor, thinking that was the problem, but it hasn't helped. I've got a 1995 Impreza 5-speed with a 1.8 engine. What else do you think it could be? Thanks! Samson
  8. Thanks a ton legacy777! I don't think I would have ever found it with out that picture. Frag thanks a lot too. the whole time I was looking right where you told me and it was correct, but the wire harness seemed to converge right over the sensor. I furgured it was connecter to the radiator pipe ontop, but since I couldn't see it I didn't want to start taking things off till I new where it was. Thanks again Samson
  9. Ok, I'm going to go look for it right now. But just to clarify. it is NOT the sensor sticking out verticaly right by the engine code, but around in the area screwed horizontaly into the "side" more or less of the engine. Here goes
  10. I'm sure you've covered this a thousand times, but I can't find it. Hard start problems, bla bla bla. Occording to the Chilten's auto manual it should be "on the side of the radiator" but I've spent hours looking all over that engine compartment and still can't find it. I also read a bunch of post here and didn't find any specific to the 1.8 liter impreza. I'm at my wits end. The more specifate you can be the better. Pictures would be brilliant too. Thanks a lot Samson
