  1. Thanks Milz... I will check it out. I have to admit that I am concerned with allseasons not coming thru in the crunch but I will have a look.

If you click on the link it will take you to a page on the TireRack website with reviews buy users of the tire. See if they sell the Blizzack and you can compare. That is how I decide on tires. I did it with my Pathfinder and love the tires I bought for that as well.
  2. what would be your suggestion for a nice winter /summer combo. I have a 2001 Legacy wagon GT and the Potenza's are needing to be replaced.(thank god )

I had one person recommend Yokohama V4 all seasons but I drive in an area that can get snow and the roads are mountainous. I am thinking of buying winters mounted on steel rims and then some nice summer performance tires mounted on the nice GT wheels next summer. The challenge is making the right move. The winter tire is confusing enough. Do I go Snow or ice. I would think Ice and the roads around here would be plowed regularlly and then leaving hard pack conditions and black ice. I would appreciate your suggestion.

You are of course the ultimate judge of what you want to put on your car's rims but more and more the consensus is that if you happen to drive in sub zero temerature a good winter tire is a must. The main problem is the rubber compound of all seasons tires become much harder around -10C° and at that point you loose much of your traction on icy surfaces and your braking distances will be much longer.

    Just my 2 cents.

  3. Thanks for the suggestion. I thought Blizzaks were Michelins... no ?

My present favourite for winter is Bridgestone Blizzak LM18. Very impressed with this as it's not only capable in snow, but performs far better in wet conditions than any winter tyre I can remember.

Danish weather conditions necessitate a good wet weather tyre, since snow is only sporadic.

Summer is also Bridgestone, RE720, which again perform very nicely in wet weather.

  4. Thanks... I love the idea of going all season for cost purposes but was not sure if I was going to receive adequate snow/ice traction out of an all season....

The V4s are suppose to be good in the snow/ice? good to know. I wonder how much difference there would be between the V4 all season and say a Blizzak winter tire...

How about a tremendous High Performance All Season Tire.

Check out the Yokohama Avid V4s. V rated up to 148Mph and great snow traction to boot.

  5. Could not agree more... proud owner of 2001 Legacy GT wagon with auto.

Pretty much fixed after 2000 (our 2000 Legacy has 160,000 and the only repair we've had is a bad wheel bearing, no HG issue at all).

I favor the automatics, because I find that they are better in snow (yah, I know I'm gonna get flamed for THAT one), also 'cause I'm getting lazier the closer I get to geezerhood. Go test drive a 2005 and try both the manual and the sport shift auto, you may be surprised.

I test drove a 2005 Outback, and a Baja, and loved them both, but I steadfastly refuse to buy a new car. I think you can't go wrong on any new 'Roo, and would be comfortable buying a clean used 2.5, 2000 or newer (whiich is what I would do, also because I like the '00-'04 styling better than the '05).

  6. Greetings ! I am responding because I just went through the exact process you did. I looked at the vw tdi wagon , I looked at small suv's and finally found the cat's meow. I bought a 2001 Legacy GT wagon 4cyl automatic with only 39,000km. That is around 25,000 miles I believe for you Yankee Doodle dandies.

In Canada we get our fair share of winter as you know, hence the decision to go with the Subaru. The more internet research I did the less I wanted a VW due to maintenance issues. Jetta's do not score well on customer satisfaction. They are good drive trains but annoying electrical problems etc.. have caused many pissed off customers. Subaru? Hard pressed to find a bad review.

I just bought mine (it is in the shop getting professionally detailed right now) but I can say I was grinning all the way home from the dealer where I bought it as I got an excellent deal.

I really suggest you go Subaru and avoid the VW.

    My two cents.

  7. Thanks dude... I was thinking the exact same approach... get the balancing and alignment done..(wife's brother is a mechanic) and see what happens from there. I have been doing so research and have found that the bridgestones that are on the vehicle suck and don't last long at all. I'm thinking new rubber. Re stereo ... I have a bid in on a cd changer.

I have the car in a shop right now getting it professionally detailed.

The cheap way out would be to have an alignment and tires balanced. Maybe you can find a $39.95 coupon around somewhere. Check the fluids too. If he didn't drive much, I can't imagine he checked the PS fluid too often. Could be a flat spot on the tires too. Too much time sitting in the driveway?

The CD button on the stereo is for an auxillary changer or similar. I don't think you should need a factory changer for it to work. Might check out ebay for a bargain and then have a local shop install it if you're like me and dislike dealing with automotive wiring!

    Good luck.

  8. Greetings... new to the site so hello to all. I just bought a 2001 Legacy GT today and very happy overall with purchase. Vehicle only has 39,000 Km on it. Some old guy leased it from new and obviously didn't drive much... but the tires show a fair amount of wear and the vehicle has a little shimmy at 65 mph or higher.. does the vehicle need alignment or just new tires ?

Question 2. I thought the vehicle had a cd player because there is a cd button on the stereo but when I went to put a cd in I realized it only takes cassette? Why the cd button? If I buy a stock subaru cd changer will it then play cds?
