  1. I was able to remember the connections - everything is back together and one more Outback filler tube has been replaced. Thanks.
  2. Anybody have a picture of the filler tube assembly for a '99 Outback? In particular, I'm wondering what connects to each end of the 3 hoses. Thanks!
  3. Hi folks. I'm gonna replace the filler tube on my '99 Outback this weekend. The 3 screws that attach the tube to the quarter panel are rusted tight. I was thinking about cutting them off w/ a dremel tool, but that will cause some sparks. Any chance that would cause fuel vapor to go blammo? Thanks.
  4. Are you saying that the parts list above is not everything needed? That hasn't been confirmed, but after seeing the state of the filler neck on my car, I want to replace it, even if it isn't the culprit.
  5. Thanks. Below is the reply from Anthony. Can somebody confirm that I need all 4 parts in the links he provides? Anything within 8 inches of the gas cap on my car is a rusted mess and needs to be replaced. ------------------------------------------- We usually will sell the filler pipe, top valve, ring and seal and screws all listed here http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partlistbymod.php?model=Outback&subcat=Fuel+Pipe&year=1999 also commonly you may need the upper valve which is attached to the old pipe coming out http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=16370 it is hard to say beyond that without looking or disassembling etc... all is in-stock
  6. Has anybody purchased a replacement filler neck online? If found a web site that lists it for $103, but I'm not sure it's the correct part. Thanks.
  7. What's the best way to locate the cause of the 0440 code? Is there a common checklist people follow?
  8. Hi folks. Couple weeks ago my CEL became lit (0440 code), so after reading these boards, thought I'd take a look at the fuel filler neck by the right rear wheel. Well, living in Wisconsin, you can imagine what I found - lots of gunk, crud and corrosion. I'm hypothesizing that there is a leak in there somewhere. My question is - can I make this repair myself? I've done simple repairs in the past, but I'm not a mechanic. Thanks!
  9. Hi folks. The check engine light on my 2.5l '99 Outback came on a few days ago. The error code is P0440, which is an emissions problem. What are the common causes of this error? Thanks!
  10. Just thought I'd let folks know what the solution was... I got a replacement bulb and pulled the directional assembly from the car. I could see that the old bulb (which does have 2 filaments) was still good - nothing was burned out. As I was inspecting things, I noticed the light would get bright or dim as I moved the bulb around, so the problem is with the wiring or connector.
  11. They work, and at the correct rate. Are there two filaments in the front bulbs? The left side is not as bright as the right side...
  12. Hi folks. The left directional on my '99 Outback is oscillating at about twice the normal rate. I don't see any burned out bulbs. Anybody know what the problem might be? Thanks!
  13. Hi folks. The CEL is on in my 1999 2.5 liter Outback. I got the code read at an auto parts store. It is: P0440 - Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction Anybody have an idea what might cause this, and how serious it is? Thanks!
  14. It's a manual trans. A couple years ago the clutch was slipping when I was pulling a boat out of a lake; under normal driving conditions it's fine, but I'm having it replaced as long as everything is apart. I've given them the go-ahead to do the work. Hopefully they won't find other damage when they get in there. It was overheating for a brief period of time - I was almost home when it happened. Given the symptoms, it sounds like exhaust gas was being forced into the cooling system at the head gasket.
  15. Looking for opinions from you knowledgable folks... Took my '99 Outback into the shop because it overheated a couple days ago. It has 106K miles on it. As I feared, it needs new head gaskets. It's also due for a new timing belt, and it probably could use a new clutch. I'm probably looking at a couple thousand dollars. I was hoping to drive the car for several more years - it's never been in an accident, and the rest of the car is in good shape. So, the question is - do I invest the money now and hope it's a solid car for at least another 50K miles? Is it still worth an investment of that much money? Thanks! PS - I took it to the local Subaru dealer. Do those repair costs sound reasonable? PPS - I've got the work break-down for replacing the belts and the head gaskets; of the $1900 estimate, $1450 of it is labor. Does that sound right?
  16. The codes are: P0130 P0136 P0500 P1100 P1101 P1120 P1121 P1540 More comments regarding them are in these two threads: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=77861 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=77863 Thanks.
  17. I took my '99 Outback into the shop because the check engine light was on. The codes are related to O2 sensor and vehicle speed sensor problems. The say that they found some service bulletins that indicate the PCMs on these cars are known to go bad. Is this true? Is it something Subaru may replace without charge? Would a bad Power Control Module cause the errors that I mention above? Thanks!
  18. There were a couple more error codes I didn't mention in my previous posting, because I'm assuming they're not related, but maybe I'm wrong. The two additional codes are P0500 (Veh Speed Sensor A Malfunction) and P1540 (Manf Cntrl Veh Spd Idle Speed Control Auxiliary Inputs). What might cause those, and how would I correct them? Is there any way they'd be related to O2 sensor problems? Thanks!
  19. Hi folks. My CEL is lit, so I stopped at an auto parts store and got the error codes extracted. Two of the error codes are P0130 and P0136 (O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction). One of them is "Bank 1 Sensor 1", and the other is "Bank 1 Sensor 2". In addition, there are "Fuel Air Metering" errors, which I assume are being caused by the bad O2 sensors. I just wanted to verify that these errors are caused by bad O2 sensors, and that replacing them should be my first response. Or could these errors be caused by some other problem? Thanks.
  20. Thanks for the info. Do you have a link to a document for this procedure? I've done some searching and found instructions for the EJ22, but not the EJ25.
  21. I'm pretty comfortable working on cars. I restored a '68 Barracuda. so I'm used to getting my hands dirty. I'm familiar with the basic mechanics of an internal combustion engine. Although working in the engine bay of a '60s era car and the engine bay of a late model car is quite different! When I change the spark plugs on the Outback, I have to remove a bunch of components first. I can almost stand in the engine compartment of my Barracuda. http://jefframin.org
  22. Hello again folks! I've got 105K on my '99 Outback, so according to the manual, it's time for a new timing belt. Is this something I can do myself? At least one of the other belts on the front of the engine looks like it needs replacing (alternator/power steering); same question - can I do that myself? Thanks!
  23. The "check engine light" for my '99 Outback (2.5 liter) is on...does anybody have instructions for determining what the error code is, so I can have some knowledge about what the problem may be? Is it even possible to determine the source of the error myself, or is special equipment needed? Thanks.
  24. Thanks for the replies. I do always use the same filter, and changed the oil in April. The first 6 years I owned the car, I always used 10w-30, but over the last couple years I have been using 5w-30 in the winter. I honestly don't know what viscosity is in there at the moment. It's possible I'm using 5w-30 during the summer for the first time. First thing I'm gonna do is put in some 10w-30 to see if that makes a difference!
