  1. I posted a thread about my 96 legacy not starting a couple weeks ago. This morning it was the same thing again.crank..crank..crank. The last time it happened I removed a plug wire from the coil pack and plugged in a sperate test wire to see if I was getting any spark. The car fired right up !!. This morning after not starting for 15 minutes, I popped the hood, disconnected the same plug wire from the coil pack and I'll be damned if it didn't fire right up. I shut the car off..reconnected the wire and it's been running fine all day. Anybody have any idea whats going on here. Its a 2.5.

  2. Previous to the car restarting yesterday, I had the battery checked and it's connections. The test results were that the battery was fine and the connections were tight. At times it would fire right up..other times it would just crank..crank..crank. The battery ran dead thru over cranking and draining it. Thats why I am so confused..at times it fires right up..others..crank.crank. And when it does fire up..it runs like a charm.

  3. Hi folks,

I'm having a very confusing problem and am hoping someone here can help. My 96 legacy outback 2.5 has not wanted to start for the last few days and I eventually drained the battery attemting to start it. I put the battery charger on and it started to make this weird clicking noise inside the car. I paid no attention and let it charge. 2 hrs. later I go out and..bang..it fires right up. Now I'm confused as to why it wouldn't start before and even more confused because that damn ticking noise inside the car won't stop !! Whether this is related or not I don't know, but when I turn the car off, it shows both front doors ajar on the dash.

Hey DUDE! Kindova flame for the regular board ain’t it?

    1. I didn’t say ALL anythings or anyones. That’s your assumption.

    2. Maybe you’ve got nothing but gender-sensitive P.C. tow-truck drivers in your neck of the woods, but the spirit of John Wayne is alive and well in most of the west. “Don’t worry you little head, purty lady” is pretty much the kind of attitude you’ll run into on the road in Montana.

    3. And on what do you base the assumption that I’m a blue collar resenting white collar worker? I’m sorry, have we met, and I forgot somewhere’s along the line? If so, please inform the director of my department that I no longer have to spend my day out in the field, regardless of weather, would you? I’d really appreciate that.

    4. I wasn’t really trying to make anyone feel better at anyone else’s expense. I related the “tow truck experience” as I’ve mostlty seen it in about fifty years of driving.

    5. Please direct me to the text where I’m calling anyone ‘jerk’, ‘sexist’, or any of the pejoratives used in your ‘reply’. Now, as to 'gratutious', 'moronic', I'll leave the use of those in the context of this board for you to ponder ... pal.

    6. As to the average American reading the owners manual and understanding the workings of their automobile, man or woman you're right everyone should ... few do!

I'm glad I just said hi.

  5. Find out what that CEL code is. It probably has something to do with what's happening. And there might be more than one fault code stored in the ECM. Sometimes the CEL gives advance warning of trouble to come. Never take it lightly...

    Hi Frag,

Never took the check engine lightly,my mechanic told me what the code was for but I forget what it was. I do remember him saying it wouldn't effect the running of the automobile but I will take your advice and get it rechecked if I can get it started...lol. After spraying the starting fluid and the car not starting or even wanting to fire I am real confused now. I was leaning towards it being a fuel problem but now.....thanks Frag

  6. Hi all,

I'm new here and hoping for a little help. I have a 96 outback legacy that started acting up about a month ago. The problem started with the car just cranking and cranking till it would finally fire. Upon firing it ran like a charm(like most sube's do). At time"s it fire up right up,other times,crank..crank..crank. As of right now it will not start at all, just crank...crank..crank. I sprayed some starting fluid in it as a last resort and nothing. The check engine light is on,but,it's been on for about a year so I don't believe this to be the current problem. I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem and how they fixed it. This is the 2.5 engine. By the way this is my second 96 outback, the first one had 300,000 mile before I retired it,wish I had it back !!!!
