  1. Practically every Subaru part mates up to practically every ther part. You will be fine with your '00 engine, 90% sure. Subaru did make changes to the engines over time, but when it comes to physical mounting and stuff, it's all the same. From '97 to '00, they've done headgasket revisions, gone from a DOHC head to an SOHC head (the SOHC's better anyway; flows better and the torque comes on lower), and for one or two years ('98 and '99) tried adding two more bolts to the bellhousing to better secure the tranny. I seem to recall that they converted from a MAF to a MAP in '00, so you'd need a MAP sensor and an '00 ECU. That may have been in '01, though. Just do your homework. I suggest poking around NASIOC some. I've learned mostly everything I know about Subarus from there or stuff linked there.
  2. My guess is that it's a design thing. "Not invented here, ain't worth a damn," that sort of thing. I'd imagine designing, building and then fielding a horizontally opposed engine would require much in the way of design philosophy that differs from what's now more commonplace engine design and implementation. Many engineers are very attached to their current ways of doing things and absolutely abhor change. Design philosophies are much like buttholes; everybody's got one and nobody likes anybody else's.
  3. Heh. Not quite, but still funny. Though I'm not aware which word Germans actually use for pushing cars (there are several words that translate into "push"), the literal translation of "push here" would be "Druecken Sie hier," or "Drueck heir," depending on situation. Not exactly Porsche.
  4. Well, okay. In the event that I don't get a tranny and diff combination, I do know the ins and outs of diff identification. The tricks and such, you know.
  5. The speed and time I don't recall where I got, but I do know that my manual says "For short distances and at low speeds, for emergency situations and when you must use the spare tire" or somesuch. So, I cite that as my source. I can get it for you verbatim when I get get back to where the book is on Sunday night.
  6. I didn't use dielectric grease or check the wires, so mine might be unrelated. I might check tonight if it's not too wet out and I can find my dad's multimeter. Too bad my good one's 90 miles away. I second the 10-20kOhms motion, especially the "They should all be roughly the same" part.
  7. Good idea. I'll check my other haunt as well. I'm a fairly active NASIOC member.
  8. Some time in the future, it'll be 4EAT->5MT time for my '97 Legacy Outback (http://users.adelphia.net/~jetwash/attomtswap.html). Problem is there were hardly any MT Outbacks in '97. I have no problem using parts from an early RS if I could. I'm told the tranny will bolt right in, but I'm concerned about the driveaxles, the propeller shaft and the differential. Could I use the diff out of an RS without serious modification (no welding)? I really hope so; MT Outbacks are hard to find and rear LSD Outbacks are nigh nonexistant. Also, can I use my existing driveaxles? I'm concerned that the spline count won't match and I'll have to make some frankenaxle out of an RS axle and my Legacy AT axle. I'm fairly certain that the tranny mounts are interchangable. I also know that my existing AT propeller shaft won't work. Can I use an Impreza shaft, or is it too short? If I need a Legacy shaft, will the splinecount match? So many questions, so little time! Woo!
  9. Is this something that's on the '97 tranny? I recall reading about it, but I've never been able to find it on mine. Also, I recall reading that it was only on the SVX. I'd like to see about this. Mine shifts rough and it might be because of that band.
  10. SOA says that it's only for short distances and low speeds. 30MPH, max of 30mi. After that, it starts to get broken. I don't know why, but I do know that there's no benifit to the company to say that, so I'm inclined to believe them.
  11. You know what? Mine did that too. Well, except for the slugishness. It got mo powah when I did it. I haven't reset my ECU, though. I'm gunna try that and see how it goes.
