  1. Go to an Impound auction with a couple hundred dollars and pick yourself another car... get it and drive it fix up your subie...

Thats my advice, right now I'm looking for a truck, to haul and a awd vehicle to go in the snow... My XT is fun but I wan't more... My friends had no respect when I bought my XT because it didn't run and until I let them drive it a few miles then they all want one.

A couple of months ago, I let my Rare Form drummer (that's my San Diego band - I live in Fresno 348 mi away) drive me to our guitarist's house after the Halloween gig. OK. He HAD to drive me because I was in no condition to do so myself. But I've driven him home on numerous occations so I figure it was payback. Well, this week-end, at the $2000 Xmas Party gig at Loew's Coronado (I love saying that) he complimented me on how well the car drove. That compliment is a greater reward than I could ever get from a car that I didn't bring back from certain death.

  2. You have respect here! We love you man... well in a platonic sense I mean. Hang in there and show you're no follower. I'm forty, NEVER made a car payment, and driving my third reanimated subie (Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag). Learn to play guitar or bass, and then when all the other guys in the band who have "cool" trucks and are trying to put the tarps over their equipment to keep it from getting wet, you're stuff is packed and dry in the wagon. You're already on the road, kickin' it in 4WD to get through the snow as you drive home from the Gig at Bass Lake (s of Yeosemite).

PS. Tarps fall off. Roofs never do... unless you have a Yugo convertible:)

  3. Seeing that the registration expired at the end of last month I figured it was time to Murphy smogged and registered. This is the first time I've tried to have the $500 87 T-Wag smogged since I rebuilt it (nwe engine, new tranny - awfull 3 spd). CO too high. The smog tech (who wasn't that familliar with Subies - couldn't locate the ECU which I found both troubling and amusing) seems to think the problem is a temp sensor, which is causing the car to run too rich. I wonder if this helps explain my poor gas mi. (18 avg), and the fact that my ugly digi-dash temp gauge tends to sporatically show higher that normal temp reading? I have included a scan of the smog results with this post.

BTW, 02 sensor is new so that shouldn't be the problem.

PS. Did I mention that I HATE the 3 spd autotranny? 4000 RPM @ 70 MPH! Sucks!!! And yes I reallize it was made for the 55 mph legal limit of the day. I'm semi-old and remember those horrible times!!! :-)

  4. replacing the oil pump isn't a bad idea.

not doing that, replace the oil pump gasket (the mickey mouse one) and..this is an EA82 right, also has an o-ring as well and an oil pump seal behind the sprocket on the oil pump. don't neglect replacing any one of these three items.

the ticking can cause bad mileage - if the HLA is stuck it'll certainly decrease the performance of the motor. a compression check will isolate which one is the culprit and if you're showing zero compression, then that could be contributing to your bad gas mileage.

i'd start with just replacing all the oil pump gaskets/seals/o-rings right now, move on from there. i wouldn't personally stretch any springs, but i've never had to do that. go with ATF/MMO after the oil pump reseal.

Yea, EA82T. It was supposed to have only about 50,000 mi on it.

  5. Well, judging from the drip location, it looks like the oil pump gasket is shot. I wish I would have thought of that earlier. And of coarse no one has one so I'll have to go to the dealer tomorrow to get one. Would having a leaky gasket contribute to the TOD? And isn't there a spring you can stretch on the rocker arm assembly that will help stop the TOD?

  6. Could a combination of a probable faulty front crank shaft seal (oil was dripping nicely while the engine was running - user install error - my bad) and a bad hydraulic lifter cause my poor gas milage on Murphy, the 87 T-Wag (@ 19 mpg)?? Just checked both the EGR and PVC valves and they are functioning properly. The O2 sensor was replaced a couple of months ago. I also changed the AT fluid. Though the fluid was only a few months old, it was less than the desired pinkish red color, and it had a little bit of foam while draining.

PS. I decided that I hate that 3spd AT. I am seriously considering changing it out for a 5spd 2/4wd shift, even though it would be a pain in the ars.

PPS. At least now I know where my oil has been going to lately.

  7. I just changed mine two days ago. I had the same problem and was in a hurry, so I just broke the old sensor away from the threaded part, then used a 22mm socket to get the threaded part out. To install the new one I used a pair of vice grips to screw it in, being careful that I was actually gripping the nut end of the threads and not the sensor body itself.

  8. Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag with 3 spd A/T is a thirsty girl on the freeway; only getting about 17 mpg, 277 mi on full tank of gas. Maybe coincidence, but when I'm hitting about 70, the check engine light comes on momentarily, and going up hill on the gapevine, she does get hot, but doesn't loose power (no clogged cat). Any thoughts?

PS. I just read the other gas mileage post and may replace the O2 sensor.
