  1. I just purchased a 2003 Subaru Outback wagon. Everything is in great shape, except the fog lights do not turn on. The switch light does not turn on, neither do the lights. I checked the fuse appeared to be fine, but I changed it out any way. I then switched out the switch itself. Still nothing. I was thinking the next thing may be the relay. Does anyone know where it is located?
  2. I have cleared out the code several times with an OBDII reader. the connection points look good, and re-checked the sensor this weekend, don't see any cracks. The only place I haven't looked is the connection plug. Also occasionally will throw a TPS sensor high input, but that dosen't always happen when this comes on.
  3. 1996 OB 2.5L 131,000 miles was thowing a P0325 code, so I replaced the knock sensor with a new Subaru one from the dealership. Code will stay out for a few days and then come back on. Checked the alignment, and all seems OK. Any ideas?
  4. OK I took it for a good long drive last night on pavement and through mud. Didn't have any fluxuations in temperature, and did not notice any bubbles in the radiator. Only thing I did notice was CEL was on code came back for O2 sensor and she said that just came on day before. Other thing I can't figure out is there was an oil spot about 4 inches in diameter on the mud shield under the radiator. Both radiators looked to be relativly new, no crap or crimps in it. Any ideas on the oil spot? I didn't notice the oil down, and no drips when left it to sit on the pavement. Only black gunk was noticed around the pressure sensor. could it be a seal around the oil pan?
  5. Thanks it's not that it is popping necessarly, but rather someone told me to listen for a snap/pop sound upon just starting that could be a sign of HG. Price listed for this is 1500.
  6. I've always driven the older generations of Subarus (currently a 1990 Legacy with 267, 000) I have come across a 1996 Outback with a 2.5L engine. From what I've herd from people around here, the 2.5 aren't that great. I was told that if when I start the new one that there is a "pop" that the headgasket is probably ready to go. Is there anything I should be looking for and ways to maintain the engine so that it wouldn't have all the problems that people are saying. BTW the 1996 Outback has 111,000 original miles on it and no rust that I've been able to see so far, need to crawl up under it. Also, are any parts transferable from a 2.2L to a 2.5? My sister just put new radiator and alternator on her 1995 legacy, but is thinking now of putting it up for parts>
  7. I think that right now we are going to try the neutral safty switch (actually on parts sheets it's called the mode selector) I went yesterday to get an ECT sensor had it in my hand and the tech. asked what was going on with the car I told him and what the CEL was coming up with for a code (P1101) he looked it up and it was for the NSS, but said that I probably had the numbers mixed up. I told him what it was doing with starting and she said that the CEL was probably right. We have a "spare parts car" and are going to take one of before we go and buy one (quoting around $165) and see if it works. I'll try to keep posted.
  8. I only thought that it had to do with fuel metering, because that's what my OBDII readed said that it was.
  9. If it was the ECT sensor, would it throw it's own code or not? The only code coming up is the Fuel Air metering one.
  10. Different car from one previously posted... 96' Legacy been having problems starting after it's warm. Car will start fine if the engine is cool. Once it's warm though it won't start til it's cooled down some (problem at the gas stations!) It's not that the engine is over heating, just that something is not letting it restart. Also, the CEL has been on since this has started as well (code P1101: Fuel Air Metering Malfunction) Could this have something to do with it? What is it? What I've looked up in the search is that it's an O2 Sensor, and that shouldn't have anything to do with it, I don't think?
  11. OK, I cleared out all codes. Drove the car for the last 2 days and did fine til coming home tonight, CEL came on, checked codes and it was only the P1070 came up (Fuel Trim Malfunction Bank 1) I did check for leaks and didn't find any. In the past (6-8 months ago) I did get a code for O2 Sensor Bank one that came up, cleared it out, and it never has come back (thought that probably it was related to moisture somehow getting in the connection). Any advice on where to go from here?
  12. I have a 1995 Legacy 2.2 176,000 miles. The other day the CEL came on and codes P0170 (Fuel Trim Malfunction Bank 1) and P0120 (Throttle Position Sensor/Pedel Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction) both came up. The fuel consumption of this vehicle has been slowly decreasing over the past few weeks (from 26mpg down to around 20mpg now) the fuel guage has also gone a bit screwy (says its on E at 180 miles, light has not come on yet though) Other than the fuel consumption droping and the CEL coming on there is no problems as of yet with the way the car is running. Any advice on where I should start? I've looked back at some searches for the codes I'm going to check for exhaust leaks today, but from there, I'm still a bit lost as to where to go from there as to which sensors to check/replace.
  13. This past weekend my 95 Legacy 2.2, started producing a few anomalies that I don't know even where to begin. At exactly the same time, when I started the car, the AT Oil Temp light blinks on and off a several times (book says that it may indicate that the AT control system is not working properly) and the check engine light comes on with code 0500 (speed sensor A malfunction) The AT fluid is fine, and is at the right level. The car shifts, but does feel like it doesn't shift into overdrive, but is not jerky. Are these two things related? Does anyone have any ideas where I should start (parts, location of problem?) Could one have caused the other, and I really only have one problem? Thanks
  14. It's a 1995 Legacy 165,000 mi. Exhaust is nice and quiet. I don't know if the sensors have ever been replaced. My guess is not, as I just changed the plugs and wires. Let's not go there! It seems to be running well. MPG are around 22-26. No smoke or anything else. Just the CEL coming on periodically.
  15. I have gone back and searched out past postings for OBDII code 0402 I get that it may be the O2 sensor, but there seems to be some conflict on weather it's the front or rear one. How would one go about checking the cat.? Car seems to be running ok, but the CEL comes on, get this code, clear it out, and it can stay out for days or even months. Usually seems to come on when it's raining or been through a puddle, but not always.
  16. My cousin is pulling apart his 1998 Forester which yesterday started dumping major ammounts of fluids FAST (Water pump/headgasket) The question that I have is this....When they opened the radiator cap after it got towed home, there was this strange blue/brown substance coming out of the top. Any ideas? I've certainly never seen anything like this before? Is there something else he should be looking at in conjunction with or instead of the regular suspects?
  17. Does anyone know if an OBD II scanner can tell which of the catalytic converters is faulty or failing? I'm going to pick up a scanner tomorrow. Does each converter have it's own code or will it still be a luck of the draw? Also, going to check out the sensor connections. Could this have anything to do with the slight drop in MPG? I don't appear to have an exhaust leak, but will look again tomorrow. If there were a leak, would that still give me a cat code? Will replacing/repairing it correct the problem? Still hate to replace such an expensive part if I don't have to. 1995 Legacy LS wagon, 158,000 miles
  18. It's a 1995 Legacy LS with 158,000 miles on it. There may be a little drop in performance going up a steep hill, but not much otherwise that's really noticable. Would taking off the converters and doing a visual be more effective at telling. Probably there isin't a real test for weather or not the converters are going other than the CEL though huh? My concern is having to pay to replace one of the converters that may not have anything wrong with it. Is it worth doing the O2 sensors first and then the rear convertor and then the front? (Prices around here are around $170 for the rear and $195 for front, that's the low end)
  19. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas. CEL came on last week in a rain storm and code read cat convertor low efficency. Had it reset and it was fine for about 5 days. Yesterday in a rain storm it came back on. What is the likely hood of it being either 1 or both of the O2 sensors and setting off this code? The MPG have dropped a little (from 28 down to 23) over the past week. I'm going to try the "rubber mallot tap" on the catalytic convertors this afternoon and see if I hear anything loose in there.
  20. any one know around the price range for a cam position sensor is? also, where is it located? Is it the one around the timing belts?
  21. 1995 Legacy Wagon..... Took it on errands today and everything was fine. Shut the car off at the last place and finished up the running around, came back out to the car to start it. It would turn over, but really didn't want to start. Eventually it did start, but the check engine light is on. Stopped at a gas station on the way home. No one there to run the computer. Went to start the car and the same thing happened. Once it's running it goes fine, it's just in the starting and the CEL is now on (wasn't before). I don't have a computer to check codes, and as of now, no one can get me in til the end of the week, just to run codes! Any advice on possible sensors or what ever would be appreciated.
  22. OK, I've picked up a used, but in good condition electric antenna from the salvage yard last night. Only problem is they are closed for 2 weeks. How do you got to electric antenna behind the fender on a legacy wagon (I'm replacing because it has been snapped clean off at the body)? I have the written instructions for replacement from there.
  23. Just purchased a used 95' Legacy LS last night. The only repairs that I need to make (as of now) appear to be the drivers side window (haven't pulled it appart yet to see) and the electric antanna on the drivers side rear fender has been snapped off. Can I replace it with a stationary one? And either way, how would I go about replacing it? thanks in advance
  24. Not that anythigs is wrong, just out of curosity.... Where is the oil pump located on a 1990 legacy?
