  1. well i just rolled the odometer over to 200k on my 85 subie wagon gl, d/r 4wd. (shes still just a baby) however, the bearings on the water pump bit the dust. its got a digital dash and the temp gauge only works when it wants to.. so as i was driving down the freeway i had no idea it was gettin toasty. as i got to my exit, i got off the freeway and my subie died in the middle of the intersection. i pushed it into the lowes parking lot and popped the hood.. smoke everywhere and a broken clutch fan blade, crack in the hood.. the entire fan/pulley all fell out as a solid unit and the bearings had literally exploded.. i pulled the radiator already and am gonna need a new one, as the fan took a good size bite out of it.. and i'm gonna need to pull the ac radiator to get the rest of this fan out from there.. so how big of a headache am i looking at to replace everything? i've heard water pumps are no fun on these.. any tricks up anyone's sleeves?
  2. Thanks everyone for your help. I got my subie running good and strong again. Turns out whoever had it before me had the disty off by a few teeth. Without USMB, I'd still be out there lookin at my car and scratchin my head.
  3. Hey I've read posts at USMB for awhile but never had any problems I couldn't figure out on my own, or by just doing a little research on the site.. until now that is.. My 87 GL threw the driver side timing belt while I was on the freeway. I've read other posts about how to replace the belt and had somewhat success with it, but my luck has come to a hault. I lined up the marks on the cam pulleys with the notches on the timing covers, and got it to barely run. It was blowing air and gas out of the carb, as well as fire. So I took the passenger side timing belt off and spun the cam pulley one tooth at a time in hopes of better results. At one point, the car would idle just fine, but as soon as I gave it any gas it would sputter and almost die before the rev, still blowing air out of the carb. Now when I line up the timing marks with the notches in the timing covers and turn the key, it's like there is no compression. And when I have the marks in the same spot where it would idle, it just backfires after it turns over. Can anybody tell me why it's doing this? or even how to make it stop doing that and give me any suggestions how to get it to run again?
