  1. I talked to the not-so-local Subaru guy. (probably close to 100 Soobs in his backyard) He is about 40 minutes away. He told me probably just dirt in the carb. He told me to run it hard for a while. 70psi is normal in an older motor like that. (150,000) I think I am going to go with the motor I have. I need to install oil pump seals, rear main seal, water pump, thermostat and a few hoses. I will put it back in and see what happens. Now that I am thinking about it I used to have an old '84 wagon that did the same thing. I revved the hell out of it and then put my hand over the top of the carb until it almost died. I did that a few times and it sucked the dirt through and ran normal after that.

I should dig out a pic of that wagon. One hot looker. Never seen another like it. It had factory air, sunroof, power windows and locks, cruise and digital dash.

  2. Well, I decided not to get rid of my dad's Brat. After thinking about it I just couldn't do it. I haven't been fooling with Soobs for quite a while so I need advice. Here it goes. He overheated it a while back and upon investigating I found his radiator was 1/2 gone. I put in a new radiator, water pump and a few hoses. A while after that he came back and said it would not idle properly. I think the damage was done. Warped head or blown head gasket? I tried to adjust the throttle cable, that wasn't it. I replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires and that wasn't it. I fooled with the idle screw and now it will idle but rough. It starts great, idles good with choke on. Soon as it warms and you hit the throttle to shut off choke it dies. I pulled the motor tonight and I am pondering on what to do next. Should I buy a headset from E-bay and pull the heads, check them and reinstall? Should I spend the time and look for another motor?

BTW, I am not up on the codes here. Is an ea82 the OHC 1.8?

  3. The idle bug has got me. My dad's '86 has about 150,000 on the clock and this popped up recently. I just replaced the plugs and wires as well as cap and rotor. Nothing. Still idles so low it dies. On cold start you pump the pedal 3-4 times and hit the key and she fires right up. After about a minute of warmup you hit the pedal to turn the choke off and it dies. I tried adjusting the cable but nothing. Looked for vac leaks. Nothing. Could it be the fuel filters? Car runs great and accelerates fine. What else?

  4. I have gone several months with clicking axles. I have gone a few weeks also. I had one pop on a Brat and I lost power. The inner joint popped and the axle was just bouncing around in the housing. Ball bearings everywhere! I just pulled it into 4wd and took off.

Anyway, don't put in a used axle!! For the money just go and buy a rebuilt/new.
