Yeah, my '84 definately has some torque. As far as belts go, I have a Honda so I know about them =). The only things that bother me about my wagon are the lack of street power (I'm usually the one passing, not holding up), and it's not a great long distance traveller (for getting TO the mountains). But other than that...it's so fuuuunnnnnn! Okay, and AT is out, maybe I can find a Loyale with the D/R. There is a wagon like mine near me that has a good body and has been sitting for a year in someone's yard...don't know any more about it. Maybe if it's still there this fall I'll ask about it if I can't find running one around here. I'd prefer one that is good mechanically that I can just concentrate on getting off-road ready. Dented body is not a big concern as long as the frame and susp. mounts are okay. Oh, so hard! So hard!

Huh...where do you get the D/R tranny from? Does my '84 have a limited slip? The PS would be nice...I haven't done any major off roading to notice a difference in that department with my manual steering except one time I bounced off a railroad tie that was hidden and the wheel just about broke my hand. Don't know if PS would help with that or not. Regular bumps on intermediate quad trails didn't seem to faze the car at all. The more I talk about it, the more I hate selling it! Aargh, but I need the money..... So far no bites on the car, so maybe it won't go? I know I can get another one, but looks like it could take some time if I don't go the Loyale way. Most people around here drive their early Subies into the ground, and the "Easters" rot away. Keep in mind that I'll have to pay someone to do major mechanical swaps like eng., tranny, anything besides brakes, most suspension work, etc. A lot of gals may be strong enough to do that stuff, but not me, unfortunately, because of medical reasons. All this info is great. Thanks, guys!

Really? I had no idea that the Loyale didn't have d/r. Does it only have high, or low? For 4bying only a low would be okay, unless you need to go on the freeway in the snow. I've already decided to sell the GL...hope I can find another one this fall! Gonna cry over this one, but need the money more. Thanks for the input...and I'll take any more so that I know what to look for this summer/fall. Thanks!

*bump* Nobody has any info????

Hey, I have a question. Is there a big difference in off-roading capablilities between an '84 gen GL or an '85+ GL/Loyale wagon? I'm talking intermediate off roading...nothing like serious pro or anything. My '84 GL wagon is stock and seems to not notice sand, gravel, snow, or dirt. I've got it up for sale, and before I consider any low-ball offers (I can't even afford to license it in March), I'd like to know if there is a big difference in these cars. I've seen a few members with their Gen 3s (Loyale) lifted and mod'd...are these easier or harder to get off-road parts? Would an automatic be worthless with big tires? Is there anything to avoid? Should I just keep my wagon and let it sit for months because I can't license it???? I don't want to sell my GL...no 4wd after just getting it! :-(...but won't have money coming in until this summer for it or replacement. Appreciate any info re this. New to Subies and off-roading. OKAY!!! Anyone with snow want to host?
madmac18 replied to Baysurfin's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Please, please send some of your unwanted snow to Western Washington! I don't want to have to drive thru Seattle and up scary I-90 to get to snow (scary because no one knows how to drive in it!!!!) I hate Washington! All we get where I live is a few inches that lasts a couple of days, then rain rain rain!!!! I want to be somewhere like Montana where I can see if I could get sick of it. You snow haters can have our rain any day! Finally have a 4x after wanting one for years and now I have to drive 2 hours for snow, especially at $2.20 a gallon. (And I don't know how to ski...would rather be in my Subie slicing the stuff up!) I'm an oddball around these parts because I have a sticker on my car that says "Let It Snow", when everyone I know hates the stuff. My dogs and I keep doing snow dances but all we get is more rain. Please put it in a box and mail it here!!!!!!! And all you lucky dogs that get to play, be thinking about madmac when you're out there! Thanks! -
I would appreciate some opinions on tires for my GL 4x4. The car is maximum stock height, stuck with the stock 13s right now. Anyone have recommendations for all-around tires? Sears, Les Schwab, Discount Tire M&Ss? I have skinny studs on it now for the winter, but will need some decent tires for all-around come spring, with some dirt, sand, and maybe snow use, too, plus the highway. Anyone have tires they love in that size to recommend? Not buying until spring... Yes, would love the Peugeot 15", but will wait until some other stuff is done to the car first (like a carb)! Thanks a bunch!

Ya, sounds like the way to go. I'll look for one for the Honda at the same time, since they're basically the same carb w/maybe different jetting (Honda is 1.5L). Back of GL is lifted highest stock will go, and I will match front...until I can get bigger wheels, tires, am going to stay with stock max height and get skid plates and brush bar first. Honda is priority for money, have close to $2K on list for upgrades, then Subie, since I'm only going to play and not go too crazy. Want to hook up with Hatch Patrol when I'm done with school and have job ($$$) to go play sometimes. I can't go any faster with Honda current susp., and a VW Scirocco is kicking my butt. Can't have that!!! After Honda is done, maybe Subie engine swap? =) But looking at all these lifted Subies is making me drool, tho. Most everyone agree to replace carb instead of ****-ing with it? Thx a bunch, guys...glad I found this site!!!!! SubieNewbie madmac18

Wow...looked at Roo-builders and so much cheaper! Thanks, Snowman. Not sure what I will wind up doing for sure in the end, will look into FI and a Weber...want to put one on my Civic slalom-racer, too. I'm still interested in other ideas for fixing/replacing. Would rather spend money on off-road stuff for the Roo, and I'm not needing alot of power yet, since I'm not pulling big tires or anything at this time. I'd probably upgrade the whole engine at that point. Right now I just want it to idle! Again, thanks! You may have saved me a couple of hundred bucks!

Howdy...just had a carb question for the Subie experts. I don't know much of anything about carbs, or Subies (have had Hondas forever). Have been learning quick, tho. I have an '84 GL wagon 4x4 with the 1.8 and 2bbl. It won't idle when it's warm and has major coughing when I try to use the accelerator. Down the highway there is a "stick" at midrange, making it almost impossible to "feather" the gas. We have used a rebuild kit and cleaned the carb out, but the gas sits high in the float. I have a bad exhaust leak which we will fix this winter hopefully (hole in pipe after maniforld and muffler), and some people have told me that's my idle problem. But one thing I know about carbs is they don't sputter from exhaust leaks. Someone suggested the accelerator pump, but can't find one listed at the parts store. So my question is...do I just go and get a new carb? The exhaust is getting fixed first, and then I have to save up for a $400 carb. I'm not going to open up and upgrade this engine, so probably don't need to upgrade carb? I would like to make this into a bit of an off-roader next year, nothing major. Got the Subie for playing in the dirt and snow. Any suggestions?

updating '84 GL with '90 Loyale...possible?
madmac18 replied to madmac18's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Okay, thanks a bunch. Sounds like not something I would want for parts unless it had rear discs and maybe good tires, but possibly put it together for the nephew. :-\ If it was an auto, I'd fix it for my mom, but alas... I'll do some reasearch on these numbers. Would like to know what I'm looking at! Just picked up a Haynes for it yesterday. I'm sure I'll be back for more later!! _________________________________ madmac18 '84 GL wagon 4x4 -
Howdy, I'm a Subie Newbie...get it? I have just aquired my first Subie, an '84 GL wagon 4x4. It has the 1.8 with 2 bbl carb and 4 speed. A friend has a '90 Loyal wagon 4x4 that he might give me. I was wondering if any of you could tell me if any parts off the '90 can go onto the '84, as far as suspension, brakes, engine and tranny? Also, I have no idea about the jargon I'm reading about, like EA82 and stuff. What are these I have? Are those engine numbers or chassis? Hard to read the threads when I don't know what they mean! Ha ha. Love the site. Much thanks to ScoobyWagon for pointing me this way. Got the car for four-bying, so hope to get together with others in WA who know something about these cars. Have had Hondas forever, but can't off-road them very well!
