  1. hey fallen, I bought my 91 Legacy in Edmonton about a year and a half ago, what a small world. With the little use of road salt there (because it's so #*$@# cold it doesn't work) my car had an excellent body condition, just a couple of minor rusty spots. Only now that I'm in Ontario, the cancer is spreading. It was a lot of work, but I took off the front bumper cover so that I could access the bottom lip of the fender and sand/prime/paint. I'm eventually going to do the same at the back.
  2. Thanks, Brettm57. For now I have reset the code and have driven about 1000 km since and nothing has come up. The hard starts I had before were due to the water temp sensor which was done. It now starts right away, like it always did. Still haven't done the e-test. Work, etc don't leave much time...
  3. Basically the reason I want to fix it is because I have an emissions test coming up and they won't (legally speaking, at least) do it if the CEL is on or comes on during the test. Stupid e-tests... grrr
  4. Ok, I think I get it. As I understand it, there is no EGR system on my particular vehicle. I have located the solenoid valve under the intake manifold pipes with the little rubber hoses doing 180 degree bends. It does look like a tight area to work in. Looks like the bolt has clear access, though so should be able to stack up extensions to reach it. First thing though will be to clear the codes and see if it comes back.

  6. Hey guys, About three weeks ago I got code 21 for the coolant temp sensor. I was having hard starts and fuel odours. Replaced the sensor and all that went away. Great. Now I'm getting code 35 for a solenoid valve. The Haynes manual calls this the purge control solenoid valve, but refers to the section on EGR control solenoid. Anyone shed some light on this? And advice on what to do about it? Thanks
  7. Well this is a good find, I am recently getting very similar symptoms: sometimes hard to start and getting fuel odours after it does. In fact my CEL has been coming on a few times and it's code 21 - coolant temp sensor. I ordered one from the local dealer, going to put it in soon. Any special advice? or is it basically remove and replace? I think the sensor is high enough that there shouldn't be any significant leakage once the sensor is off. And how about sealant? Would teflon tape be advised or some other thread sealant? Thanks.
