  1. Yes, we have done all the maintence outlined in the owners manual. We went to look at new cars today, but their is really nothing wrong with ours. We still get 28mpg, the same as the first tank of gas seven years ago:eek: . I guess it is hard to justify a new car if hte old one is still running so good.
  2. I have a 2001 Outback Sedan with 140,500 miles on it. I have done tires three times, tune ups and oil changes. That is really it:) . So when will the other shoe drop? Or is it just a good car?
  3. Well after 118,500:eek: miles the car (01 Outback limted sedan) finally is showing some age. The front end is starting to clunk over bumpy roads. I had it up on jack stands, ball joints tight, struts seem to be tight. I did find what I think is the front sway bar bushings worn, the drop down links are rubbing the bar. Also the lower a-arm bushings that mount at the rear. The right side seems tohave slight gap the left side does not have. Has anyone else had front end work done? What was replaced? This is our first real major problem, aside from brakes and leaking head gaskets (left side only) Thanks for any feed back.
  4. Well we have 95,000 miles on the Outback sedan. We went through the factory Firestones in 40,000 miles. Our second set was and currently are Cooper Lifeliner STE tires. Which they have been terrible. What has been a good all year tire that we can get 60,000 out of? Thanks for the feedback.
  5. My wifes drivers side fog light was smashed, has anyone replaced the factory lights with something other than the OEM? They are big $$$$$$.
  6. The car will shift the same with one or two people in it. As far as the downshifting, I aree with the brakes are cheaper. The trans is taking the same amount of stress going up the hills as going down. Do you think you could stress the internals of a trans going down the hill more than going up it? Same wight, same speeds, same internals. Just my thought.
  7. My wifes 2001 Outback Limted has 78,000 miles. The trans has been serviced by the local (VanBortel Subaru) dealer. We have begun to car pool to work and I have noticed a delayed shift into fourth in the am. This only happens on the first time the trans shifts through the gears. The rest of the day the trans will shift fine. We live at the bottom of a hill. It is about 3/4 mile up the hill, the trans will hold third gear until you get above 4500rpms, which at this point the road is flat and you are going 65mph in a 45mph zone. If you let of the throttle the trans just holds third gear, it will not upshift to fourth. After the trans has gone through this it will be fine the rest of the day. The fluid level is correct, not burnt. No other symptoms I can think of. One thing we do is on long downhills, or coming up to a stop sign we will manually selec third then second. This really saves the brakes. This could not be a cause could it? Now that I think of it sometimes if we are going 40-70mph and let of the throttle to slow for whatever and then tip back into the throttle the trans will intermittently shift not hard but almost like it's not sure what gear to be in. These are not foot to floor tip ins, just easy crusin down the road. Any ideas? Is it worth taking to the dealer for them to say "well right know it is not doing it so everything is fine" or should I just drive it. We have the warranty until 100,000 miles through Subaru so I kinda am not to concerned yet.
  8. our 01 outback sedan with an auto has a shift concern. when cold it holds 3rd gear, if you let off it will not drop back to second or upshift to fourth. this is most prevalent when going uphill. Once warm the concern goes away. the car has 72,000 miles and has been dealer seviced since new. the fluid level is okay and not burnt. no trans light has come on on the dash. our local dealer has said no prblems. it just has never done this before. the arranty is good for another 30,000 miles so I am no to concerned. Just wondering if anyone has had a simliar concern.
  9. I am looking at a used legacy sedan, 97 with about 100,000 miles ($3500.00). Did this year have the head gasket concerns? Also found a 98 impreza with a 2.5l at 108,000 miles, ($5500.00) How about this engine any concerns. My wife has a 2001 Outback limited seadn with 70,000 on it. The headgaskets were replaced last year under warranty. Beside that the car has ben great. My 2004 F-250 V-8 is not so good on gas. We will keep that for around the farm, but I want something for $3000-$4500 to run back and forth to work (65miles). Any suggenstions? Thank you
  10. NEVER USE SYNTHETIC UNTIL THE ENGINE IS FULLT BROKEN IN. THE SYNTH. DOES NOT ALLOW THE RINGS TO SEAT INTO THE CYLIDER WALLS. I WOULD WAIT UNTIL 10-15,000 MILES BEFORE SWITHING TO SYNTH OIL. JUST MY EXPERIENCE AND OPINION.
  11. I have a 2001 Outback Sedan Limited. Has anyone put rear rotors on yet themselves? What aftermarket brand did you use? Local parts stores say they cannot get them for a Subaru with 16" wheels. How do you back the e-brak off to slide the rotor off. Is there a small star wheel to turn? Thank you.
