  1. After it warms up the idle does drop when I put it into gear. The stumbling and falling on its face happens sometimes (at least 10% of the time) the rest of the time it idles fine and runs normally. I did replace everything listed earlier and the car ran almost like new (after I figured out the firing order :-\ ) but when I went to pick up the wifes car it sputtered an sputted and jerked.............just like a fuel filter would but since its new that was quickly ruled out. SO Im thinking of replacing the vaccuum hoses at the next possible moment but right now the focus is going to the Dynasty (Oil Change and Tune Up) so the Subaru will take a back seat for now (Sorry if this doesnt make sense IM abit tipsy tonight) Thanks for the input.
  2. UPDATE: I managed to find one of my problems..........a few vaccuum leaks around the air cleaner I fixed those and it started idling better.........but I think there are still a few more though. The deal is the cars been sitting in a garage for 3 years before my son bought it so more than likely the hoses have dry rotted abit. What do yall think? I got a new set of plugs, cap, rotor an a new fuel filter an will be putting those on today.....hopefully that will solve a couple of the problems.
  3. Ok Im sure this was covered somewhere and I did a search just not awake enough right now to go all the way through all the results. My sons 84 GL idles around 1000 rpm when you can get the little bugger to stay running (which after about 5 minutes or so it does). Then during acceleration (like pulling away from the house or a stop sign, it tries to die, just basically falls on its face but reengaging the clutch stops this problem. What gives right now Im because I can smell gas when I shut the car off which in my knowledge of cars this usually indicates a rich condition but is there something else that Im overlooking? Fuel Filter? Tune Up? Timing Belts or Chains (Im not sure which it is yet) BTW according to the manual the actual idle speed for an 1800 cc engine is 950 RPM's with a manual Trans and A/C Any and all help is greatly appreciated right now.
  4. Can you reach the spring without taking off the steering wheel? Im gonna try and fix that today along with try to adjust the fuel mixture on the carb to see if that doesnt correct the idle problems as well.
  5. The Dynasty is my wifes car with over 180k miles on it and the Subaru has 184k I dont think either ones going away any time soon. Besides the Dynasty is a VERY reliable car at this point and has made two 2650 mile round trips to West Virginia and back.
  6. Ok this has probably been covered bfore somewhere else and either I couldnt find it or I looked right at it and went on. When my son bought his 84 GL the ignition key was still in the switch but it wouldnt release, and to start the car you hav to slowly turn it into the start position. Thats problem 1. Well Wednesday afternoon we decided to go fishing, I started the car andbegan to backout of the driveway when I noticed that the whel had LOCKED and I was heading for the neighbors fence. After fiddling around with the wheel including turning the wheel with the ignition completely off it finally started back up with the steering wheel freed up, its done it at least three more times since then. Whats the deal.......is the cylinder completely shelled? (well thats kinda mute considering that the inner part of the switch tries to come out when you try to pull out the key) I guess what Im asking is do I need to go to Gering (about 35 miles away) and get a JY switch or just pop for the new one and see if the old key will come out so we can lock/unlock the doors in the car. Ive already got to put on a new Inner CV boot this weekend anyways. Sorry just a newbies wonderings
  7. Im hoping that maybe I wont get flamed for this post so thats why I tried a search first. Im trying to figure out what the models or options of Subaru are as well as the generations. I keep seeing the EA and EJ names.........Ive got those figured out to be engine identification numbers (the post I read yesterday helped alot) Im also wondering what identifiers I should be looking for to identify these engines. Any and all help will be appreciated.
  8. LOL Actually its the family Dynasty and Im kinda already taking over driving the little fellar lol. Its fun to drive (when it stays running and the steering doesnt lock ) thanks for the warm welcome.
  9. Just wanted to say Howdy to everyone. My son just bought an 84 Subaru GL Wagon and as good as a mechanic as I am Im lost on whats what and where on the little fellar. So I look forward to getting some help from the members of this website.
