Broken hood cable or latch 97 Legacy

Featured Replies

Someone came to look at a car and I can't get the hood up. Seems attached to the "handle" inside the car jsut fine and had about the typical resistance when I pulled it. Tried one pulling and one bouncing the hood to no avail.

Did a search and turned up a thread about using an old hood cable to remove windshields but not what I was looking for.

Any guidance? How to get the hood "freed" to get it up to check things out?

Go fishing for the latch under the hood with a coat hangar.

It'll either be bound up becuase the car has been in an accident and the latch is no longer aligned correctly (most common) or it will actually have a broken cable. Usually when it just misaligned you can get it open by having someone pull up on the hood while pulling the hood release latch. If that's not it you can try and use a coat hangar or some welding rod to hook the tab that the cable attaches to on the release under the hood. Not an easy way to go though.

Did you can try to push it down in case it didn't seat the latch last time it was closed? A strong push down over the latch at the front of the hood may seat it and allow the latch to be released.
