October 1, 200916 yr another issue i got...... (97 impreza outback) inner fan controls only work on the 4 position. relay clicks on 1 though. manual states there is a resistor in the switch itself, would this be the fault? or should i be looking elsewhere?
October 1, 200916 yr These things all work a little bit different. Check to see if the fan motor is getting power at the connector when the switch is in the first 3 positions. If not, pull the hvac control panel out of the dash and test the switch.
October 1, 200916 yr It will most likely be that resistor. It would only work on speed four becuase it does not limit the voltage through the resistor on high speed. That's what it sounds like, though I though the resistor was down near the motor. Been a long time since i've done one though. Sounds like you're on the right track though. Dan
October 1, 200916 yr Author ill check for power in settings 1-3 at the motor tomorrow, good idea if power not there, then most likely its the resistor...hence ill need a need a new hvac control. things that didnt bother me about the car in the summer.....bother me now LOL had to hook all the metal cables up to the vent control stations, that was a pain.
October 2, 200916 yr if power not there, then most likely its the resistor...hence ill need a need a new hvac control. . You shouldn't have to mess with the HVAC controls, just need to replace the resistor unit. It's under the dash, passenger side, next to the blower motor (according to Haynes.) Haven't done it on my Subie but had to on wife's Maxima--wasn't too difficult. New Nissan resistor cost about $30, no idea what Subaru would charge. Good luck.
