'99 Legacy engine swap

Featured Replies

Great forum everyone, lots of useful information.

My '99 Legacy with a 2.2 is likely going to need an engine in the not too distant future. The only information that I have found so far is that only a '99Legacy 2.2 engine will swap in to this car. This makes for a small number of low mileage engines available and makes them rather expensive. I was wondering if it is possible to swap in a '99 or newer 2.5 as these seem to be much more plentiful and a little less expensive. I would imagine that the computer and maybe some or all of the engine harness would have to be included in such a swap, but would like to know if anyone has had any experience with such a swap.

Muchas Gracias

As long as the exhaust ports are the same, you should be able to use several years of engines. You may have to use your intake, but that is not a big deal. There are other members that will chime in on the years you can use, but you are not limited to a 99 alone.

any 2.2L engine 90 - 99 will work, but you will be much happier if you use one that matches your EGR set up. pre 95 they didn't have EGR systems, and 95s only had them in auto trans cars. in 97 the 2,2L engine became an interference engine, before then a broken timing belt meant no damage.

if the engine you install does not haveEGR and your current engine does you will get a CEL all the time.

but you have lots to choose from.

why do you need an engine?

i may know where you can get one.
