February 2, 200422 yr Hi there About a week ago I smelt something sort of burning/electrical/rubber. Since that time I have heard a new "whine" in the engine, that goes up and down with the accellerator, but lags just a bit. After poking my head around under the hood, I >suspect< that it is the AC compressor. I don't really use AC that much ,and was wondering if it is easier to just disable it (ie, remove the belt), than replace it (ie = $$). Do I need to worry about the decreased load on the system? Seems like that could be a >good< thing. Thanks -Nick
February 2, 200422 yr To disable it disconnect the compressor clutch wire. It should have a connector that can easily be unplugged. I would wrap both connectors with electrical tape or something to keep them clean. Make sure you tie them out of the way so they dont cause a problem.
February 3, 200422 yr Yes you can just take the belt off and unplug the compressor if you want also...
February 4, 200422 yr If your compressor locks up when you turn it on, do something really simple: don't turn it on If the clutch itself is seized and it won't turn on or off, just take the belt off, that belt drives the compressor only...
