EA82 5spd into EA81 engine/chassis

Featured Replies

Hey all, first post here and must say what a great resource this is. Thanks for bein' around.

OK, I've got an '83 5spd/2WD/EA81 wagon that is just about to enter orbit around the Moon(225kmiles). Tranny input bearing is getting noisier and the 2nd gear syncro is more and more reluctant. So I'm starting to collect parts for an engine/trans replacement session. What are possibilities of using an EA82 5spd/2wd in my present situation? Been digging around here and haven't found anything definative on this mod.

As for now, I'm gonna try the fancy Redline gear oil(75W90 NS) to see if that helps out things somewhat.

My car is just a daily driver and I'm not interested in any 4WD mods. That's sorta why I don't think I've found what I'm looking for yet. No EJ swaps either.

Maybe someone has a 'low' miles 5spd EA81 tranny they wanna get rid of....:slobber:

Words of advice/guidance to help me reach the Moon and beyond would be helpful.

All EA series 2WD 5 speed transmissions are the same from 1982 on. You don't need an EA81 specific tranny as the EA82 version is the same unit.

1982 was the start for the fat-case EA71s, huh?

Of course the answer was so obvious I didn't see it.

Thanks,

Nate

Yeah - prior to '82 there were still top-mount starter engines being used. Though the '81 2WD w/EA81 might be a side-mount as well. '80 definitely is not.
